  • Help! Weeding 3M Frost.

Posted by Simon Worrall on February 17, 2016 at 10:53 pm

    Hi
I have quite a few meters of 3M Frosted Crystal to cut complex patterns out of. Weeding this stuff is really difficult because it is so hard to see the cuts in it.
It has clear lining paper, and a fussy surface with sparkly bits that hide the cuts.
I have tried it on different coloured backgrounds and shining lights at it from different angles…it doesnt really help much
Does anybody have a clever solution?

I’ve often weeded that stuff on the glass once applied especially if lots of fiddly bits.

Not tried it but coloured chalk dust?

    Thanks David.

Weeding on the glass? Might have to be the answer for the bits I have missed, although this stuff sticks like the proverbial and breaks up when pulled off!
Chalk dust…interesting suggestion. I think Ide be afraid some of that colour would show up on the job.

Have weeded some stuff similar over a light box before now

    Or just thinking out loud.
As it has a clear backing print in draft mode on to paper the design.
Place under the frost to see where to Weed
    Just a idea

Hi Simon, I feel your pain when weeding intricate frosted etch.

When 3M first launched the product many moons ago it actually came with a black liner to aid weeding but they had to change this as when ever the knife was slightly too deep then the black would transfer onto the adhesive but ever since those days I always lay the etch over the top of the dark surface, a piece of black vinyl for example.

    Hope that helps

Do a glass weed test first, I heard of this method before and one design we had to do for a pub window was very intricate and was taking a long time to weed so I said lets just weed on the window as I heard it works. Biggest mistake ever because like you said it came off in tiny chips and took 4x longer to weed and not only that I had to send my guy out for about 3 days standing at the window picking pieces off the glass. Very costly excersise for sure.

    Do a test first 😉

Good luck though, it’s terrible work.

We have also had difficulty with white etch which had a white liner, the only way we could see the cuts was to put a torch flat on the table so it shone across the surface and this would show the cuts better but only where the beam of light is so continuously moving the torch to see.

    Thanks for all your suggestions.
Chris Wool that is a doozy! :appl:
I put a pen in the plotter and drew the pattern, lined it up underneath the frost, and suddenly it shows you where to weed!
Specially since the pattern is a repeating one, I just reuse it each time!

    Nice one.
    😀 😀 😀
