brian, I sent you a test email, and asked for a reciept that you had recieved it,
    this was the answer:-

The original message was received at Tue, 12 Feb 2008 23:52:42 GMT from host86-154-67-231.range86-154.btcentralplus.com [86.154.67.231] (may be forged)

—– The following addresses had successful delivery notifications —– <brian> (relayed to non-DSN-aware mailer)

I’m not sure what it means, but sure the geeks will
    😉

    Hope you get it sorted

Brian, do you need a web site or just an email addy?

you dont need to host it yourself, that means a server, and running 24/7
most people use a third party to host, that is store your site on a server.
    (like uksb)

But by host I would think you mean, control., and yes that is easy.
you just access and update your site like you access and post here, well sort of.

again I’m just filling in while the geeks explain it better.

Brian, I sent a message to you (PM).. i tracked back the ISP in question… not sure whats going on with Devnet to be honest.

I think your message Peter did get collected by the Postman, but might not be the route that he should be taking. What Brian may have a problem with is knowing when the postman is coming or the fact the government have closed his Post Office without telling him

    Nothing arrived as yet.

but for under £20 a year you could have your own domain name & email addresses (brian@signs-elite.com)** or similar.

    http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/Mail … _lf=Static

Just buy the domain & the email package, can log in or use Outlook to send / receive.

** mods – this does not exist & isn’t a real email address

Brian, because you are called elite signs, most of the variations are taken, like anything@elitesigns.com/net/biz etc
so you may find it difficult to get an address that relates directly to your business,
do a google or yahoo for web names, and try variations to see if you can find one that is appropriate, use underscore or different spellings?
maybe not good though as search engines will point to others,

Have you though about changing your business name ?

all the Brian little’s have gone, but (no offence) little brian.co.uk is still up for grabs.

    not much help, am I?

If you cant get any sense from devnet, contact nominet, they can confirm your registration and advise you on how to take control of your name

apparently your registration runs out soon too.

Like peter says – two ways to get control of your domain name.

Contact Nominet themselves – they ask for you to fax over headed paper to prove ownership of your site & a signed letter to declare you are the legal owner. You can then move it to your new host (eg, 1and1). we had to do that with our company one a couple of years ago.

Or get on to Dev Net (UK) Ltd…that doesn’t appear to exist anymore?!?

David’s right, Nominet can send you (or download) the forms to change the tag, costs about £10-£15 from memory. The name is registered to you so shouldn’t be a problem. Obviously you need to choose your hosting company to get the new tag requirement, thing to look for when choosing new company is how does the support work, email only support can be a right pain. I could help further but I’m not allowed to post my details.

    Brian,
I had a little play and have pm’d you the result.
Your host site appears to me to really be called gandi net and they live in the same town as you, which you probably know already.
I couldn’t find them as ever being registered as a limited company.

Brian – you won’t get anywhere with devnet (Perth business) I suspect…

companies house reports ‘devnet limited & devnet (uk) ltd as both "Status: Dissolved"

I can Email you the details privately if you want.

…explains why you are not replying to my emails. I better take the pins out of that look-a-like doll then 😳

Dave Rogers is right mate. (Actually, all the advice here is good) My Host went broke a year or so ago, and I had to prove ownership of my site to a new web host, and everything was sweet. Its not hard at all. Once you get into it, you’ll wonder what all the fuss was about. You may develope a drinking problem, but that is a small price to pay… isn’t it 🙂

Its a pretty simple thing to do, for a small site, no big deal. I’m happy to set something up for you, but it would be slow response times, as I use Aussie based servers.

I’m sure Dave Rogers would be happy to direct you in that regard, but it would require face to face discussions, as explaining it remotely would be more confusing than it seems now.

One thing I would do, as Peter suggests, is buy the web name now! You don’t have to set up a site yet, but just get the name sorted so its there to use when the time comes.

Some good advise here so you should get it sorted.
Setting up a domain name and email etc is very easy if you use the right company, most like 123-reg will give you a control panel so you can sort out email forwarding etc your self, or you could get a friend who knows what their doing to sort it for you.
It really is very easy these days, one of the reasons I stopped doing websites.

I have a domain name that expired in December, but wanted to transfer it to another hosting company as the one holding it was to dear.
the first company would only transfer the name if I renewed the registration with them.
I spoke to Nominet, they are very helpfull, as the name is still registered to me (they do not release it for 60 days after registration expires)
All I had to do was to assign the name to a new register company.
did it on line direct with nominet, cost £10+vat,

Peter, just as a pointer, if you have more than one domain with nominet, they will do a bulk transfer if you need it still at £10.
but done separately its still £10 each, I rang the guy at nominet as I was going to transfer mine when I couldn’t contact 123reg, but its all ok again now.
Just in case anyone didn’t know .com domains are harder to do, tucows holds those but the domain registrar has to release them before they can be changed over, not good when they cant be contacted.
