i think i know exactly how you mean… but cant picture the substrate to give you a solution. now im not explaining proper..
what i mean is.. when i hold vinyl and want to apply it, i stair at it for a minute or two with possible probs going through my head. beacuase everything i apply is dry you dont get to mess around lifting and laying.. well not as much as wet. “this aint helping you any” 🙄

sometimes, if all else fails mate, it calls for a single slit in one end of say the “O” stick it down but not all the way round. carefully peal the app tape off. stick down one part and then laydown the next to meet where slit you will have a small overlap if all goes well. take a sharp blade and slit.. pick away the overlap leaving a much smaller overlap. .5mm if possible. you could be good a slit it spot on and show no join.. fair enough but! the vinyl will shrink in a week or sooner, just a tiny bit and expose the join because it will pull back and open it. so.. small overlap is somtimes better.

if you have excess vinyl then there isnt much you can do with it.
if i had to do it and i could not slit it, then ide apply without the tape. bending the “O” & let the inside circle rest on the surface. using my finger gently rub round the inside circle of the “O” so it just touches and no more. then round it again, but this time a little further in and so on. you will find it will stretch itself into shape without you being able to notice it.
if it starts creasing or somthing before you reach the outside just gently heat it a little then proceed again.. wouldnt recommend it though if you havent done it a few times…

Further to Richards question, is there anyway of applying an oval shape approx 850mm x 500mm to the bonnet of a car without having to cut it ?
The bonnet curves in two directions hence the problems.
