  • help please having problems with my network?

Posted by Chris Wool on October 28, 2007 at 11:34 am

my biannual fight with a network.

just built a new computer trying to connect it to the network.
well the other 4 see it and can write files to it but the new one can not see any of the others.
something not turned on but what.
when i try to map a network drive it gets as far as mshome then says that i don’t have permission.
    logged on as administrator ?

what has this muppet done ?

    Check your Ip address

    right click my network places
    goto properties
    right click lan connection
    goto status
    goto support tab

    it should be 192.168.0 something
Leave the network adapter to obtain its ip address through DHCP

make sure the lan calbe isn’t plugged into an uplink port on the router

check the workgroup name by right click my computer
going to properties and goto the computer name tab

Verify this against your other computers.

Also try and ping your gateway
    Goto start
    run
    type in CMD
    u get a prompt
type in: ping 192.168.0.1 and paste your reply here

You got zone alarm or something installed?

    Can you also try this

Goto to one of your old computers that has a shared directory. Remember the shared directories name and get the ip address of that computer

    Then on your new computer

    Double click my computer
and in the address put int

    \\ipaddress\sharefoldername

    What do you get?

Bed time soon for me 12.05 now.

    thanks jason
i think the system must be week cos it sprung in to life when i plugged just two computers together, then it slowly found the others.
apart from the furthest away, only 30 ft atmost.
    thanks
