  • Help needed with my own Van Design?

Posted by Stephen Murray1 on June 22, 2009 at 10:48 am

Hi All. I’m a bit stuck when it comes to doing our own van design. Obviously it has to make a statemen. But is it the right one? All comments and criticisms are welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Stephen, first reactions always the best rather than go on a ramble.

The Company name is unreadable plus you have to turn your head to read all the stuff at 45 degrees.

As a style/identity it is okay but not to read, sorry.

    Hi David,
i really like the design. It may be a love it or hate it type thing but i honestly could read the company name with no problem.

It may be a little hard to read for some people, one way to ease this would be to add the company name once again at the top of the area where you have ‘web design’ etc in the same font as this. That way it just confirms what the large writing says and the brain will naturally put the two together if you see what i mean.

Get rid of the ‘T:’ and the ‘w:’ that way you can move both phone number and website closer to main writing and stop them getting lost at the bottom of the van. Change the phone number to pink and make it slightly bigger than the website which you should keep in white.

Then remember i mentioned you should add the company name in the simpler font above ‘web design’ make that pink as well, then it will keep it separate and the balance of pink and white should be harmonious.

Just an idea, but i’m only a beginner!

But i do think the van is really good, because it shows you are capable of some pretty dynamic design work and will be a good advert for you.

I like the design as a whole but my main concern is that the contact details are a little lost, the phone number is too small, and after all this is the way that people will be able to get in touch with you to give you work. Just rethink the positioning of this, but the design has a nice impact over all

Hi Liam, but could you read it as the van is flying past you on the M6 :lol1:

If you did all the readable stuff on the back of the van (everything horizontal) that would help, you could leave the Corporate Identity sides as is.

    I absolutely love the colors.
Like the subtle greyscale services too.
I would remove the contact info from the sides entirely, to buy you more room to make the logo/laundry list a bit bigger.
Then on the back, where it is more likely to be read, put the logo on there straight with the contact info (minus the T and W)
    😀
    underneath it, straight.
That way nobody in your town will wreck trying to read it or develop a stiff neck.
    Love….Jill

    Hi David,
i definitely see what you mean, also you often some times only catch a glimpse of a van as it’s moving through traffic, so i get what you’re saying about it being difficult to read.

BUT, sometimes these types of logos are more eye catching and interesting and make you look a bit harder to work it out for those extra seconds. This kind of unusual design sometimes appeals to different people. It shows me the designer can take risks and is unconventional and that would appeal to me as a customer. But it’s probably not for everybody, so it depends if you want to go for a safe option i suppose.

    I think I like it 😀

The only thing I would change would be to make all the background text a bit more subtle…………………for me it’s just too light and confuses the logo a bit

Obviously it will get a little bit lost but I think it’s too difficult to read properly anyway….but it adds to the design, if that makes sense

Evening All ! Just back in the office after removing etched vinyl of windows all afternoon. I think the glue and tar remover might have killed a few million brain cells so I hope my answer to your comments make sense.

O.K, I know that the font is not the easiest to read and even more so when rotated at 45o. However, the font and the grid layout of the text has been used on all our corporate literature and we’re keen to keep the branding consistent. I did have trouble with the logo text in earlier designs as it can look too much like a graphic element itself. So when I added another graphic element they rivalled for attention. I really had to make the company name the centre of attention.

I think all the comments make sense regarding the back of the van. I’d planned to have all the information on a horizontal and let the back be business end in terms of getting our contact info and ‘laundry list”:D across to the viewer.

I must admit it’s been interesting/torturous designing my own van. I’ve designed many for other companies who often opt for the “safe” design and wanted to do something a bit different for my own. We knew we were going to wrap the vehicle and played about with images of chameleons and big splashes of colour and felt a lot of the designs looked cluttered or too busy as some vehicles wraps can do. I suppose that’s the thing with vehicle wraps is that it makes a big statement everywhere you go. So it’s probally worth a little time and a little market research to make sure your delivering the message you want. In our case it’s a young vibrant sign company with a sense of design , I hope that the van will go along way in delivering the message.
    😀 😀

hey i like that looks very classy
what i think would look nice is to do the wrap with a matt finish and then apply the "jamjar" over the top with a nice high gloss finish.

i can give you a tip on the removing glue from windows…just spray with water and use a safety razor to scrape off….no sticky snottyness or dead brain cells.
a great tip a window cleaner told me.
and I like the van design

Yup – I agree, soapy water and a scraper with a stanley blade is great on glass. 😀

Hi Scott. Yeah i’ve been playing around with matt / gloss contrast look in my head. I’ve noticed a few high-end sports cars with a matt black wraps and think it looks amazing. I like the thought of driving around in a batmobile.:D

Thanks for the tips regarding the etched vinyl. I’ll be sure and try it next time.

I like the matte/gloss idea too. I am planning on doing that on my own new sign out front.
