help needed with built up lettering please?
Hi all
I’m a bit stuck on this one, this is my fist built up lettering job and i realy would appreciate some help if possible.
The customer is after their fascia sign (12ft x 1 ft) to have bronze effect lettering 50mm thick (or close to)
the font they insist on using is Lucida Handwriting.
I was going to use reynabond as the backboard if poss, and the letters are to be flush with it not raised.
the worst thing is i have 2 weeks to complete it, and i’m just off to wales for a wedding and i’m not back until monday.
what would be the best material to make the letters out of, and is there a good bronze effect paint on teh market?
and where would i start at quoting for this?Thanks in advance if you can help, i wont see any results till late sunday

It sounds like you need “SIGNROC” from Spandex
If you do not have experience with acrylic built ups I certainally wouldn’t start now 😮
Signroc is a high density polyurethane foam and comes in 50mm thick sheets. It is a bit pricey but is great to use if time is against you. Stick some vinyl on the face of the signroc with the letters drawn on it to protect the surface and cut out with a jig saw CAREFULLY! then Prime, Undercoat & Topcoat. I usually use cellulose paint and get a good finish. If you are using Reynabond just screw through the back of the board into the letters.

Spandex sell signrock…
(they are expensive and never really had much joy from them, but then i have not always been pro spandex) 🙄
Although another alterntative is to use exterior grade mdf.This can then be sealed and sprayed (cant remember what paints)
Then as said, screw through back of board to fix.
You could always use a thicker foamex???

You could always have letters made from stainless and sprayed, these can be fitted flush to the panel, and may not be as expensive as you may think

Hi Vince thanks for the reply, in the end after all my chasing around the customer went for bronze effect vinyl, straight onto the fascia board.

I know this job is done and dusted but – I have been asked a few times for really thick lettering. I will always use MDF. glued and screwed in layers. Only the top and bottom ones have to be solid, the rest can be hollow if required to keep the weight down. I am making a 75mm thick letter sign at the moment using this method – cheap to produce – just make sure all the edges are sealed or you will be picking them off the pavement with a spoon!
