  • help needed please with a network problem?

Ok… I’m no computer expert so hopefully someone can help.

We had one machine go bang and was away to get a new motherboard. It needed a clean install (I’m already out my depth) and is back. The guy that fixed it doesn’t know much about networks so when I came back in the machine is half on the network.

It seems to be fine with one other machine on the network but is asking for a password to access the 3rd. As far as I know there are no passwords set up, anyone got any tips? I’m kinda all out of ideas.

Don’t know enough to explain what we have… 3 comps with 1 hub/switch

    Thanks very muchly!

    Hi Gavin

Try typing ‘administrator’ in the user name box and leave the password box blank, we also have one machine ( on a network of 10) that does this!

    regards

The Administrator password is setup when the computer is first installed. Someone then sets that.

No joy with this I’m afraid.

The tech guys are coming in tomorrow but if anyone has any suggestions to save a few quid that would be much appreciated.

basically the 3rd computer will end up being ‘clean installed’, you should have a sticker on the computer somewhere that has a Windows XP code, if not they try and sell you a Windows CD or install something.

    Backup now!

ouch – don’t say that! Is there no way of assigning a new password and then trying that?

I’m no use at all this stuff in case you didn’t already guess!

I think wires maybe getting crossed here.

Gavin are you saying all machines boot ok and windows loads, just the new clean install won’t communicate with the network?

Hi Tim, yes and no, the clean install machine asks for a password to access one of the other machines on the network, but all other connections are fine – even the same two machines in the other direction. Tried Administrator as a username with no password and a few other variations, all with no success.

    Cheers

Well networking on the 3rd computer authenticated access could be changed I guess, but bit blind in what to diagnose without the PC in front of us and anything related to PC World engineers, well they just want in and out. I strongly suggest independent engineers as they will learn your circumstances better.

Gavin how are you trying to get the repaired machine to log on to the network?
have you tried making a new connection using the network connection wizard in My computer/computer name/

Dave – it is an independent company, they will happily spend the time repairing it, unfortunately they will also charge a lot for it!

Peter – that is how I tried to get it on the network – It sees 1 other computer and an external hard drive with out any issue’s but asks for the password when trying to access the 3rd machine.

thanks for your time on this guys!

Is it set up on the same workgroup/domain as the others? Check it in control panel/system/computer name. Also check if it has a dynamic or static IP address, have you got a broadband router that asigns IP addresses?

    Networks!!! Grrr (:)

Hi Mathew, yes we have broadband and the router hands out dynamic IP’s.

The machine is on the same workgroup as the others, just double checked this.

I’m cracking up here, though to be honest we have been very lucky over the past couple of years so we were due some kind of computer drama!
