  • Help Locating Polystyrene Supplier please?

Posted by M Brown on July 1, 2008 at 2:48 pm

    Hi All,

I have a job that needs to be cut by hand the old fashion way with the old jigger. Does anyone know where I can get hold of some 4" to 5" thick polystyrene sheet to jig on top of.

    Thanks
    from
    Mark

You could try Travis Perkins. I’ve bought it from there but not that thick.

Ashby’s packing is only 50mm thick. Jigger blade cuts right through at and falls apart, makes a bloody mess. Need a good 100mm thick so when the blade cuts the material it only cuts half way through and it all stays together.

Doesn’t any one use the good old jigger any more and good old fashion hand skills.

    What’s a jigger then?

Presume he means jigsaw but I thought polystyrene was cut with a hot wire cutter?

The polystyrene is to be used to put the sheet material on while cutting it. Not using the polystyrene for the sign.

Jigger is slag for a jigsaw.

By putting two bits of polystyrene on top of each other is messy, as the top layer gets cut all the way through and moves about.

Hasn’t anyone done it this way before in their life time of being a sign maker.

    Hi Mark

You could try this company – http://www.springvale.com/page_view3.asp?InfoID=554

They are part of a group of companies, one of which produces the EPS (expanded polystyrene) that you are looking for. The company we use are based here in Ireland and they make ‘blocks’ of EPS at sizes up to 600mm thick and in different densities. This is the Irish company in case you have no luck… http://www.aerobord.ie they should know of UK suppliers anyway.

    Cheers

As Ian said, a Builders provider could stock polystyrene sheet but maybe not in the thicker sheet sizes. You could try contacting a manufacturer

    Hi Mark

Ah Yes the joys of hand cutting fascias for those of us without CNC routers. I have spend too much time over the years stencil cutting my own fascias and now leave it in the very capable hands of people like T Signs in Margate. This leaves me more time to do more profitable work in house.

But in reference to your question I am one who has served his apprenticeship doing work like this although these days would not have a clue where to get 4" thick polystyrene

    Good Luck

Just wondering, if you used polystyrene in your apprentice days, how long has it been around? and how was the job done before it was invented?

    Hi Peter

    Im not that old…lol

Its only used to support the panel we also had benches in work with built up sides with an internal recess 120mm deep and 300 – 400mm wide which you could use to cut lettering out you had to move the panel around but it worked fine.

    Kind regards

    Alex
