  • Help & Advice on Road Markings please?

Posted by Jeremy Howes on March 23, 2011 at 11:34 pm

    Hello,

Does anybody have any experience with the application of road marking paint? I have been asked to re coat existing road markings on the premises of one of my principal clients and any recommendations of paint, materials and methods would be greatly appreciated

Probably taking Sign Making to an extreme but I hate to turn jobs away.

    Thanks for looking.

    Jeremy

I’ve done this a few times but coming from a traditional background I’m probably more comfortable applying paint. It is straightforward enough though.

Consider the condition of the existing tarmac and the type of paint previously used, whether thicker brush/roller type paint or the spray type that you can use with a wheeled applicator tool.
If the surface is very good and tightly compacted you can use 2" masking tape to the edges of your lines to paint or spray them. Sweep the area thoroughly of course. You can get the paints from any good decorators merchant and I think B&Q. Paint wise I used Cataphos which lays down a thick hard wearing line. The spray can types are not so thick and if the tarmac is loose or dusty it just soaks straight in and looks very weak.
I also have a large disabled parking stencil cut from 1/4 ply which I made to spray these signs through.
    Hope this helps a little.

    Kevin & Neil,
Apologies for the belated thanks, I have been incommunicado for the past few days.
My customer has specified the thicker brush or roller application method, so it looks like Neil might have the solution (forgive the pun) by suggesting Cataphos.
Thanks again, your suggestions are are much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Neil,
Just one more question, the Cataphos is available as a Chlorinated Rubber or Water Based solution, which one did you opt for and why?

    Cheers

    Hi Jeremy

As ive said before in a similar thread I wouldnt get involved in this other than to put your mark up on it and sub it out as its the sort of thing that can come back and bite you in the bum – we all hate those people who buy a cutter and think theyre signmakers – same with white lining really I leave it to the professionals

I have some white lining contacts PM me if you would like them

    Kind regards – John

I’ve only used the chlorinated rubber type so I’ve no experience using a water based paint but as many finishes are WB nowadays I guess it’s got to be OK.

Also, I think if it’s a large job I’d take on board John’s comments.
