  • HELP!! accurate side panel template for vivaro & transit custom required

Posted by Hugh Potter on October 18, 2016 at 6:19 pm

I know this a very cheeky ask, on thursday I have two vans in for quite a lot of work – I’ve taken on a bit too much by agreeing to do both vans on one day rather than seperate days – I now have to fill in the side panels with a solid colour.. I’ve got all the cut vinyl done by using the impact outlines but I don’t think they’re accurate enough to make a template from.. my plan (when just one van booked in) was to make a template on the day but I fear that time will be against me…

Does any one possibly have an acurate cut file for the side (and rear) panels on a 2014 swb transit custom and an 05 SWB vivaro that I could simply cut out – knowing they’ll fit!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can guarantee you no matter what outline library you find, the template will not cut and fit. even if it did the alignment of the panel would be very difficult.

    easy solution…
Call William Smiths and order a roll of Knifeless tape.
when the van arrives, go around the parimetre of the panel with the tape.
flood coat the panel with a bit of vinyl about an inch bigger all round.
pull the tape through and your done. much more accurate!

I’ll say it again, someone is missing a trick here. Sign companies will pay for a disc of accurate panel templates. I know I would

    Hi Rob,

I was going to do it Phills way to be honest, it’s how Ive always done it with odd shapes on anything, I was just hoping that someone may have made their own template to fit the aforementioned vehicles.. as I’m doing more and more of them I keep threatening to take the time to do digitise an accurate panel fil outline!

I do have wrap cut pro but fint it awkward on sharper corners..

Easy enough to line up if you do it wet. Bit tricky doing it dry.

I try not to do anything wet these days but I think I may flood these wet!

I am not a fan of the "PRO" version. the tape is too thick and not as flexible as the red version of same.
The red ones much better and easy to do this type of thing, but as i say, the knifeless tape will do it no problem.

Simon, wet application? ooohhhh "wash your mouth out of that foul language" 😉 😆

For real sharp corners I put a cut into the plastic to allow the string to bend more sharply.
Yeah Rob I was waiting for somebody to react to that comment! :smiles:
Still, back in the old days I used to apply nearly everything wet, including flood coating whole 8×4 sheets, and I really never had an issue with it as long as you squeegee from the middle outwards, and squeegee HARD  .

    WRAPCUT WIRE

WrapCut Wire is the latest addition to the WrapCut product range, and the first WrapCut product to utilize a metal wire filament, enabling the product to cut through the toughest films with ease without the danger of damage to the surface beneath. WrapCut Wire can be used to cut vinyl, carbon fiber, paint protection film, and everything in between. The cutting filament is always at the edge of the tape, producing impressive results with much less effort.

A single 100m reel of WrapCut Wire.

Thanks guys, I’ll look it up. going to go with a template for this one as I’m not happy with the curves on this tape, not tight enough!

MDP Supplies sell both Wrap Cut and Wrap Cut PRO. About £9-£10+VAT per roll.

Only messed about with Wrap Cut and it seems to do the trick!

With regards to applying stuff wet… if you don’t mind me asking, why is their this big "no no" surrounding it? I appreciate it alters the adhesive and a "more skilled" fitter should be able to apply stuff wet, but if the outcome is the same (something is stuck to something else), and it saves both time and potential wastage, I don’t see the problem in certain circumstances?!

I’m with you Peter – it’s just Robert that’s being precious about applying everything dry… :awkward:

I do prefer to apply dry but I’m not to proud to admit that occasionally I get beaten by certain things, on this occasion the panel on the custom curves both lengthways and widthways, even if I stretch a vinyl (in this case bog standard oracle 551) over the raised outer panels, it’s touching in the centreand I can see bubbles before I begin!!!
