  • Hello people ! (not very original i’m afraid !)

Gosh, where do I start. Feels almost like being in a confessional as I type this ! (never done this sort of thing before) however, having recently formed a partnership with a company who dabbled making a few road signs and things, I’m now plunged into the creative world of sign making (gulp !) which is a whole new experience for me having previously been a photographer ( hence the moody ‘slung over the camera’ avatar – sincere apologies but its the only one I have – honest ! ).

Being ‘reasonably proficient’ with photoshop I now find myself grappling with illustrator expecting it all to work the same way (it doesnt !) learning the workings of a Summacut plotter and a pretty wide Cadet printer – 3 weeks into it and I’m thoroughly enjoying it (if a little frustrated by winging my way through illustrator cs2)

Anyway I just thought I’d say that so far the UKsignboards site has been invaluable and have used many of the tips shown in the forums (even building our own vinyl racks from scratch – thanks Rob !) and I get the feeling I shall be here on a pretty regular basis.

    Keep up the good work

    Hi Lee,
    Welcome!
We can always do with more people that use Photoshop. I learned Illustrator the same time I learned Photoshop in school. I think that was a bad idea. They have many similarities, but are completely different as well. Do you cut vinyl straight from Illustrator?

What a warm welcome 😀 Thanks to everyone.

To answer some of the replies (apologies to any that I forget to reply to my memory is REALLY bad )

wow what a warm welcome 😀 thanks everyone…….

    😀

Right where do I start…… currently based in Thetford in Norfolk – predominently a manufacturing and logistics town between Norwich and Cambridge. When I first came to work here they were using Pro draw which I had a bit of a struggle with so thought illustrator would be easier and more creative to use. Generally work out of that now and cut vinyl out of that too using Winplot.

Normally with photography lighting I use Elinchrom flash however with video I’m aware that things are a bit different and it used to be the case of using tungsten lighting and the video camera would correct it (it being on the right setting of course !) I have a friend who shoots Hi Definition video cameras professionally and will pick his brains this evening as to the the best way to light video indoors and will re post. I have purchased equipment before from a company who specialize in video lighting http://www.optexint.com who would be able to help also.

Oh the photo of moi was taken on a timer by the way with the camera propped up on my dresser in me bedroom 😉

Once again many thanks for the warm welcome 😀

only thing you need around here Lee is a sense of humour. :lol1: ….oh..and you knew spomething about signs.

I’m a hobbyist photograper, not to your level tho, I purchased a Nikon D70 Digital last year, but they didn’t tell me I needed to be a rhodes scholar to drive the darn thing. Funny thing, when I’m taking shots with it, everyone assumes I must be ‘good’, if only they knew 🙄 😳

Tis true digitial cameras are a wonderful thing (and darn complicated sometimes!) – most of the time i shoot my stuff on manual so its me who controls the camera rather than the camera control what it wants to do !

The digital revolution has been both a blessing and a burden really. It makes the learning process of taking photographs alot easier – particularly in respect of composition however the workings of digital has complicated things. Now theres the software out there to correct things in photos (like shut eyes, blemishes or even removing people altogether from a photo !) I guess you get more fussy what you send out and that slows the process of the whole photo thing down considerably.

It is a rather odd senario really – for years and years there was increased development in film technology which in the end produced some fantastic film and then the industry took a huge step backward in bringing out digital cameras where the the picture quality was really quite appalling.
Its put alot of high street D&P labs out of business so lots of fors and againsts for digital really. Still thats progress for you !

The D70 is a very capable camera so stick with it – you’ll get some great results ! (errrrmmmm……if you arent getting them already thats is !)

    right….who wants this spade ????

    🙂

I know what you say Lee, about photography.

Had my own dark room for years, and used OM10 & OM1’s, had all the lenses etc, then business got tough and I had to sell the lot (including the house).

Now I’m on a whole new learning curve because the software replaces the durst enlarger, and I’m totally lousy at photoshop 🙁

I’ve sold some photos so I must be doing something right.

    Thanks for your reply Lee
