i have spent some time in Cape Town over the years my ex girlfriends brother was a cricketer, played for Cape Town and Durban he married a SA girl, she was a ballet dancer in Cape Town city ballet.
Great place i was very tempted to move at one stage especially with the pound against the financial rand so strong… miss the braais 😥

CT is now a major tourist destination and has changed in the last few years , to the good – Ah yep Braaivleis and Potjekos and a few 6 packs – SA’s staple diet 🙂

Adrian – My wife knows Janet , danced with her and I have seen her dance , we were nver socially friendly with them.
My wife (Ruth Brown Ballet) went on to teach and become an Examiner of sorts ( I don’t get that involved in that side of things apart from making a few signs and trophys for her)

Mike – Our facility is in goodwood – the afrikaans isnt bad at all 🙂

Cape Town has changed dramatically , it’s a major film shoot and tourist/conference destination – Im not sure if both of you were here when the waterfront was being developed?
Mallard signs sounds familiar , I will ask my operations and sales manager and 2nd in charge about it , she used to work for Maizeys plastics (I poach my best staff from them , they are one of my suppliers and they normally bitch a bit , but generally are happy when I buy tons more stuff from them cos of it)

Signage in CT has undegone some changes , a lot of the big cos that relied on big contracts have got very small , a case of all your eggs in one basket
Tons of fly by nights and garage operators out there doing basic vinyl cutting on ABS and messing up that market.. New tech processes , print on demand and being able to turn out big volumes in very short times seem to be the market here wants. Lots of new construction requires lots of new signage and the completion of a major conference centre will require some serious digital printing , hence our installtion of a large format with a very good laminator

What sells here , and where we position ourselves , is the top quality stuff
We rather take on smaller runs and do combination type stuff (combining CNC. laser , digital etc to make stuff that others cant ) , expensive point of sale fabrication etc. Working for other sign guys is a good profit centre too , but fraught with problems.
I do no rigging , application or installation whatsoever unless pressed to do so and charge a “I hope this price frightens you away ” fee to do so if the customer insists – its a lot easier to pass the job to a rigger and creates work for others. Basically we offer a sort of one stop shop – you can get your conference banners and signage done at me , get your badges , awards , promotional items , table card holders etc etc

Iv’e looked at a lot of posts on this board and perspex seems to be something ppl shy away from- we use tons of the stuff and find it an amazing material??

SAB bought out Millers in the USA – so Castle will soon be available across the pond!!
PS One thing I have never understood about the british is :How can you possibly drink warm beer ?:)
I am actually of British stock to some extent , my grandparents on my late dads side were britsh (the other side lithuanian)

Hi Rod, we lived in Paarl first then moved to Pinlands when I started Mallard Signs, then we bought a house in Table View (Circle Road) not far from you, then we had a plot in Blouberg but got rid of that just before we came back to old Blighty.

We left in 93 just as the waterfront development was taking shape, and just before the bomb went off at the little cafe/theatre thing.

I would love to go back for a holiday.

I was into the sailing scean, do you sail the big boys out of The Royal Cape or are you a dingy sailor like me at Rietvei. My club was out at Vogelvlei where I was on the committe for about 10 years, spent all my free time there. I used to sail an “Extra”.

Sorry Robert if this is going off the subject, just like to chin wag 🙄

I live almost on the vlei , just a little above the Milnerton aquatic club
CT has changed radically since 93 , its also cheap to holiday here
I started on a dabchick , at zeekoievlei , then an extra , then a hobie 14 , 16 , then keelboats ending up on a l34 racing a bit.
I sailed at vogelvlei If I remember correctly, Jonathan Levin is my cousin and he was friendly with the Van rijswyk family and we went there for a weekend once.,
Ive sailed most things , love it but havent been on the water for a while,
At the end we used to sail out of Royal cape and every easter and xmas sail up to langebaan and play with our toys , every boat brought something and we shared as well as having a supper club , each night it was one boats turn to cook for the rest – great days – you bring back forgotten memories – it sure is a small world.
PS I enjoyed sailing the Hobie 16 the most , on the sea. Very fast , very close to the water and trapeezing was wonderful.
