Hello from Norwich
Hi all,
Only just starting up in business, so have been reading through the forums and picking up some tips and tricks.
I have been working in Graphic design for the last 20 years, working for an Advertising agency, been doing bus stop signs, brochures, leaflets, newspapers and Bus T signs.
Only ever got involved with the design, never the installs..
Just been made redundant, and this is something I have always wanted to do, so i am having a go.
I have myself a cutter 1.2m and have been doing a few local jobs for a few small firms.
What I really want to get into is Digital vehicle graphics, mainly for custom cars and such, I have done the wife’s Galaxy and wrapped that, all went well, looks good, shall put some pictures up, so you can have a looksy…
I don’t have a printer yet, or a unit, i am relying on local printers to supply my printed media, but they are very slow, so if anyone on here fancies a bit of work i am open to all offers…
I am using Corel X4, Illustrator, Flexi 8, and Signcut at present.
I have been searching and looking for a printer but they seem to be approx 8k used, so that will have to wait a while, any one know of a good starter model… Was looking at a Tiara (Mutoh Rockhopper) but that sold before i got to it.

Hi Mark, welcome to the forum, does your plotter have an optical registration system because that is something you will need for print and cut jobs if you buy something like a rockhopper which is a print only machine.

it does not no, its a cheapy 1.3m redsail, but has done me well so far.
I know a man selling a Roland ColorCAMM 60… He says its print & cut and prints 1.3m.
Do you know of these???any good for outdorrs work??
I did see a printer on ebay 60" new sino 750, but only takes coated media, how does this work??

I think the colourCAMM is very old so you may end up with more problems then it’s worth and end up costing a lot more.
The other one that takes coated media is probably a dye or pigment printer as these have to use coated media, I have a pigment printer and a summa cutter with optical eye so do stickers on it, also good for posters and roll up banners etc, generally they are cheaper machines but consumables and media are much more expensive, my inks are about £120 each and it’s a 6 colour printer 😕
Best bet is to phone dealers and buy a second user machine as it will come serviced and with a warranty.

Mark, I thought the PC60 was a 610 wide machine, anyway regardless of width it is an old machine and not supported by roland anymore. I have seen posts on hear from people looking for printheads as they are getting quite rare now. Its a thermal printer using ribbons rather than ink. Personally as Warren has said I would steer well clear of it as you could end up buying nothing but trouble and an expensive door stop.
The other printer you mentioned is a dye/pigment ink printer and as Warren has already said will require coated media so won’t print on to as many types of substrate. it is a printer only so you couldn’t contour cut anything and the prints from it are really only suitable for indoor or short term outdoor use. Again not really the sort of thing you should be looking for. -

I am keeping my eyes open for something a bit more suitable.
From what I have read i assume eco-solvent ink printers seem to be the best for outdoor digital vehicle prints.
