    HI ALL.
My name is Dermot Howard and I have just joined. I live in an area called Jerusalem in south Co. Kildare in Ireland.( I think I have heard all the jokes, but if you have any new ones please let me hear them) I am 30 and currently half way through my first year of Marriage. What a time we have had of it the past year or so, it all go and it’s great. We have organised a wedding which was last August and at the moment we are putting the final touches to a house we are hoping to start building shortly along with everything else we all have in our own lives.

I have been in the sign biz for the past 10 years and still learning as I’m sure a lot of you are. Something different every day/week, a new request / demand. It’s all good as we get to learn something new, it would be a boring old life if we knew it all.

I started in my parents shed out the back, doing vehicle graphics and health & safety signs. That was my day job while I worked in a local hotel nights to pay the Credit Union for my start up kit. A Gerber GSX 15Plus, scanner and Compaq computer and I still the GSX to this day, it’s a super machine. The Compaq has had its day, but it was the best computer I ever had.

After a while I moved down the road a few miles to a small little house on 1.5 acres about 3 miles from town, set up in the garden shed there(8mt x 3mt). I put a small sign out side the gate and the biz started to come in. (the value of road side signage) then I decided after a few weeks I need a bigger workshop and a screen printer, so off I toddled into the bank and got a loan to build the workshop and buy the screen set up. That summer we built the workshop, I, Dad, Brother and an uncle.

The next chapter is don’t put all your eggs in one basked. As the bottom will fall out of it and I had No eggs lets and No cash flow and no clients as I was too busy looking after the client with all the eggs.

So I scrapped by or a year or two, should have closed but did not, biz started to pick up slowly and I spent a few years paying off the year of so I had to build things up again after the bottom fell out of my basket.

So then I got a versa cam sp300, fantastic machine, does everything, after I got it I was ridiculed by my family as all I spoke about was the printer and no one shared my excitement, I could not understand it.

I may go do a little work now; the next installement is to follow

    Love the intro mate.

Welcome to a great community. I think you’ll fit in just nicely.

I’ve done all the eggs in one basket too. A few days from Bankruptcy, but begged my creditors to give me time to work of the debt.

That was about 14 years ago now, and I make sure I’m not put in the same position again.

    Congrats on the recent marriage.

Married 25 years last October. Hard to believe I know as I still look like a teenager. 😉

    Hi All.

Thank you all so much for your warm welcome, I never thought I would get a response like this, its great.

Shane, Neil and Lynn congrats on your 25 & 29 years.

We just celebrated my parents 35 on St.Patricks weekend. We had a family weekend in the West of Ireland, we hired a house for a week and Mam and Dad spent the week there. The rest of the family along with wives and b/f or g/f travelled for the weekend. It was great and most important it’s all Mam and Dad wanted their family around for them. I even made a banner for the occasion!

While there Brian, my brother and I climbed Croke Patrick, it’s a big oil famous mountain over here. St. Patrick banished the snakes of Ireland from the summit of it so the story goes. It’s a tough climb, loose shale and big rocks to climb over. It was a great day and a big achievement. Dad was so proud of us as he had done it about 2 years ago and had been getting on to Brian and I to do it and we did.

Is there anywhere I can attach a photo of the mountain??
