  • Heavy duty free standing signs

I have to quote for about sixty free standing signs.

They don’t need to be pretty, they are going into an industrial environment rather than a shopping centre, but they must be bomb-proof. By that I mean they must stand rough handlng by operators with IQs in single figures, and have absolutely no chance of blowing away in whatever high winds might be encountered anywhere on this planet.

I was thinking that maybe a five foot pole stuck into a fairly substantial concrete base would do the job. If the base was round it may be possible to tilt the sign over and roll it along to move it to a new position.

I was thinking 76mm diameter poles so that we can use plate and channel panels with standard fixings.

Any ideas on where to source something like that would be most welcome.

A large number of American DOT signs come from this company. Here is the British website for the same company. http://www.seton.co.uk/ Maybe they have something you’re looking for.

Frank, the mods are quick off the mark today. Can you PM me the link please.

Simon, the Seton site will take a bit of looking through, loads of stuff there but what I have checked ut so far looks very expensive (UK pricing). I’ll keep searching through it all though.

    John,

Have you considered the ‘off-the-shelf’ road sign frames you can buy.

The frames come in different sizes for standard road signs but there is
one that holds a 600mm x 450mm approx. sign panel.

You can buy these from………….. can’t remember the name of the company at the moment 😳

If this is of interest to you I’ll find the contact details from an old invoice
so you can buy them from your local branch.

    🙂

p.s. I think the frames are about £20 each ?

Neil, those frames are no good. My customer needs the sign to be about five feet high. Also they would need work to make them heavy enough to stay in place in high winds.

Frank, that’s the sort of thing I want for the post, but set into a heavy base. I’d prefer to buy them in as a finished item rather than start mixing concrete myself. 😀

    Hi John

Have you tried SMP A frames, I ordered one of the large ones and man was it heavy 😮 No chance of that blowing away but not sure if this is the kind of thing you are looking for.

They are solid metal (not aluminium as magnets can stick to it) great for signs that have small changes to them, I did it for a church when they have functions and used magnets to change what event is happening in the hall.

hope that helps, sorry about babbling on about magnets 😕 😳

    cheers

    Warren

    quote George Elsmore:

It’s not that we never do signs George, just that we only do them for good customers, or people we like. In this case it’s a double whammy as they qualify on both those criteria. As another plus factor, these signs are to go into two car storage yards, so it IS vehicle related. :nana:

Just an idea off slightly from your own.
What about some sort of keg type barrel fabricated with studs on the top plate so a pole base plate can be bolted on, or even have the tube go through the complete centre of the barrel to the base. Then fill them with sand either on site or prior to delivery via a filler with plug – you could then fill them to a weight that will enable them to me moved as you described but be stable enough in the wind etc.

    Tim.
