• Heater full on!

Posted by Peter Munday on July 14, 2009 at 12:37 pm

My Grenadier G2 has developed a rather interesting fault just recently, in that the dryer part of the heater remains on full heat no matter what you tell it to do. The only way to switch it off is to turn off the machine at the mains.

I have contacted Signmaster Systems who sold me the machine only to be told that there is no known solution for this problem and that until a fix is avaliable then I must live with it. Not quite what I was hoping to hear, so I thought I would ask on here to see if anyone else has come across this problem and knows of a fix for me to try.

    I hope someone can help.

sounds like a thermostat problem mate.

is the machine under warranty or repair contract

Unfortunately no Chris 🙁 the machine is now two years old. I have an engineer here now but he’s never heard of this problem before and wants to try changing circuit boards but is not sure which one to try. Signmaster Systems tell me there is one other machine in the country that has the same problem and they have been trying for months to sort it out by changing boards, but to no avail. I don’t want to become a guinea pig for the engineer to sort out this problem that’s why I thought I would ask on here.

Whenever I’ve seen this problem it is nearly always the thermistor. This is pretty much the same thing as the thermostat for your central heating – but we call it a thermistor so we can charge more (Joke!). When the desired temperature is reached it should cut the power to the element. I’ve never heard of it going on the drier before.

When you say the drier though – do you mean the solid metal slab hanging off the front of the machine ? – because if so it has it’s own mains lead and you can turn it off without the printer with a switch next to where the mains lead goes in.

Also there is a cable that plugs in to the underside of the printer from this slab – is that securely pushed in and is the cable or plug damaged in any way. This cable reports back the temperature to the main board. In additional this drier in some countries is an optional extra, and there is a software option on the control panel to tell the machine whether the optional drier is installed or not. If this is turned off it may not be controlling the drier at all.

Always worth checking that you have the latest firmware installed – the last version is 2.70 I believe. You can find out the current version by goin to Information in the machines menu.

Thanks for that Mike but all is ok now, the engineer replaced a small circuit board and it’s running fine.
