I have a question for the heat transfer specialists on the site, I have been asked by the local Bowling Club if I could put some text onto a flag for then. The flag is a standard St Andrews Cross supplied by trounce.
Is there a heat transfer film available that would be suitable for use on a flag like this? The flag will be used externally so its got to be able to stand up to blowing about in the wind and the rain.

hi martin, most companies that supply garment film also do one for nylon/poly etc, ive used Grafityp’s “GRAFIFLEX EXTRA” on flags before, seems to work great,

I’d echo what kevin said Martin, but I’d check to see if there’s any sort of coating on the material before deciding what to use. I’ve had my fingers burnt again this week with some Beechfield Umbrellas that won’t accept anything but very expensive reflective despite what the film makers reccommend!

For the record I use Flock on everything I can get away with. It’s easy to assure people that it’s ok…..’it’s been used for years on Football shirts’……..doesn’t crack, looks good and weeds ok as well.

    Martin,

I’ve subbed onto a flag for a friend, watch out for the nylon thread used to assemble these things, it MELTS bigtime. Had to re-sew the edges, couldn’t give it him back that way.

    Martin C,

With you using flock a lot, how does your machine stand up to this, does it end up with a build up of filaments from the flock at all?

Just very cautious about putting this near my PC60, don’t want another bill for a head yet.

    Sharon,

I started out using Magicut from TMT which has a good print like finish but when you come to weeding small designs things like the dots on top of the i’s are nigh on impossible to ‘hold’. I have tried a number of the films such as Easy cut, Easy flex, Extra Flex etc., etc., and again they are ok but can appear plasticy so that’s why I stick with Flock. I think the end result is far better/classier and if you get a customer who wants the same but in a bigger quantity you can have the transfers made without too much difference in appearance.

As for the plotter getting bunged up with fibres, no, I’ve not had a problem. I’ve had no hair loss at all!!

One thing I would say to anyone thinking of using Flock is to try several colours from different manufacturers. White is easy to cut, easy to weed whereas other colours such as Grey can be really tough to do. Another benefit of flock is if you hastily weed it and lose a dot or letter you can retrieve it and it will stick onto the backing sheet in most cases.
