  • Head strikes on the first 2 meters of the day!

Posted by Damian Blackburn on May 7, 2013 at 12:22 pm

Hi all, I have an sp300v and wondered if anybody else has this problem. I use the printer everyday but the vinyl seems to warp on the first 2meters or so causing the head to strike the sheet. After the first 2meters or so it then goes fine and will go on all day with no problem. Thanks!

Best guess, it would be where you’re storing the media over night? Going from cold to 35degrees + CAN cause the adhesiveon the vinyl to make the media ripple.

In an ideal world, media would be stored horizontally at room temperature with a slight westerly wind :lol1:

I think the realistic way is to store upright, not leant against wall as it can cause the media to bow slightly, and to run a small amount of heat in the room you store your media in over night. I’m sure your specific media supplier would be able to give you more definitive information though.

Stafford as usual is spot on, always allow your media to come up to room / working temp, a head strike will hurt your pocket more than waiting an hour or so for the media to be ready………….don’t leave a heavy roll on the back of your printer for too long, the weight can cause a distortion at the resting point of the roll.

It isnt often I can give advice to anyone but the replies above offer the correct advice. I had a similar issue with mine.

The ever helpful and astonishingly knowledgeable Adam at Metamark told me to store the vinyl at room temp after I asked why my first job of the day often left a line of shading running through the vinyl.

    Cold, it was……

Unroll some media as well, so it is loose on the roll this can help

Thank again for all the help. I have found that if I jog the sheet in and out a few time over the dryer it seems to work fine.
