  • Hazard Signs – is there an industry standard to abide by?

Posted by Jon Fields on September 1, 2005 at 9:01 pm

    Hi all

we have some hazard signs to quote for a construction site.. i have noticed generally some signmakers selling them at a standard size..say
    250 x 150 etc..
is there an industry standard we have to adhere to..or does it not really matter as long as the sign is correct in itself.
    cust wants some 300 x 200

    many thanks

    Jon

Just had a quick look at BS5499 and The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996, and could not see any specifications on sizing, apart from being legible at an appropriate distance.

460mm x 610mm or eight pictograms clustered on an 8′ x 4′ sheet is popular with us, no regulation on size only %of surface area that is coloured.

    Hi Hamlet

How do you mean, % of area coloured? I never knew there was a restriction?

Using the hazard sign as an example, information from BS5499-1:2002,

Shape: Equilateral triangle with radioused outer corners. Yellow background with black band (thickness 0.07 of the sign height).

Graphical symbol, black located centrally in triangle.

Border: White, width at least 0.025 of sign height.

Prohibition Sign: White with red band (thickness 0.1 of diameter), cross bar at 45 degrees (top left to bottom right) thickness 0.08 of sign diameter.

So if I make my own hazard signs, and they dont conform exactly, I could be…what?

    Hi Lorraine,

This is the act that applies that applies in Ireland which states that colours should take up between 35 and 50% of the sign.

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/ZZSI132Y1995.html

Never measured any of our signs for % coverage an have never been pulled up by customers or the Heath & Safety Authority.
