  • Have you ever suffered from your customer’s paint job?

Just a quick post with a picture of one of the van’s we did last week. It’s entirely the customers design and layout but when I quoted he said the sides were flat and newly painted.

When I saw the van it was clear he was telling the truth. The sides were flat apart from the gouges along the length, but I guess they were fairly flat gouges. The paint was brand new too, but unfortunately was a pot of household gloss white applied with a roller! I touched it with a fingernail and, yes you’re right, off it peeled. I then demonstrated what would happen with a piece of masking tape. My customer still wanted us to go ahead so we did, with disclaimers etc.

All in all we managed not to lose too much paint and the vinyl was still on when I left the van. We didn’t put our company sticker on the back!!!

    hi all
i went to fit one about a year ago, a luton as well & it was painted in hammerite. Not a pretty site, but once written still looked quite impressive

I’ve had a number of ‘workies’ vans – old beat-up transit pickups painted with dulux gloss / floor paint and a roller. Described over the phone as "a yellow transit"

The other day I had a transit cab that had been hand sprayed outdoors on a windy day – every surface was like artex / sandpaper.

The absolute worst was a luton, with the box painted in, wait for it….vinyl silk emulsion.

I’ve also had my fair share of cheap ‘professional’ paint jobs peeling off with the application tape, including a sports bike fairing – came off like it was shrink-wrapped in clingfilm.

    Embarrassing all round!!
