  • Have they been ripped off?

Just got a job in for a composite sign – 4870x800mm, 3 colour job.

They’d already had a sign made from another company for the grand sum of £300.

They bought it in to show me. :lol1: :lol1:

They’ve paid £300 for a 1950x320mm folded blue composite sign. Same again 3 colour layout.

I don’t know what I would charge for a 1950×320 sign tray but £300 sound an awful lot.

On closer inspection, they haven’t fully weeded the vinyl, it’s not even been welded/joined where letters overlap, theres 1 spelling mistake and the text has two creases in it!

Firstly is £300 the going rate for one a folded sign tray?

And secondly what should I be charging for a 3 colour, cut vinyl composite sign 4870 x 800mm supply only?

David sorry can’t help with the pricing but as for the sign they have already got why didn’t they take it back if there are so many errors with it?? I am guessing that’s the reason they are not going back to the same people for the other sign.

4870 is over 3000 or 4000 lengths of composite… so it have to be two pieces

with regards the cost… well each to their own

Get it out of one 1220×2440 sheet but yes two pieces.

They want a blue background not sure whether to flood coat, or buy in blue composite??

Well I’ve just quoted £550 for 3 off 700 sqr signs trays with lettering and brackets.
I’ll get them out of 1 sheet but by the time you’ve made the trays and brackets then your into quite a bit of time.

Or are these flat signs not trays?

David you won’t get it out of one sheet if the sign is 800mm high, standard sheet sizes are 2440 x 1220 & 3050 x 1500 as far as I know so unless you reduce the height you won’t get it out of one sheet.

    David,
There’s no such thing as being ripped off, the fact I’d the other sign company upsold their product to the best possible value they could achieve and obviously the customer was happy to pay that price before.
Never feel guilty for charging high for your work, Because no-one will feel sorry. For you when you have a bill to pay.

I bought the contents of another sign shop at an auction a few weeks ago. Two forecourt signs £30 and their paint store contents (approx 125 Ltrs of 2k paint of multi colours) for £50. I sold the two signs yesterday doing nothing but painting them with the paint I bought for £1800+vat for 3 hrs work. Do I feel guilty ??

    NO 😀

Good point that’s going to be two sheets. That’s easily 60quid cost so about 180 retail + time and materials.

Customer now want flat composite sign, with a £350 budget. 🙄

    Cheers guys.

Don’t really want to order in two sheets of blue, and end up with two offcuts that will be sat around for god know’s how long.

Might be able to talk them into having a slightly shorter sign – they seem to be price driven.

don’t worry to much about the off cuts as they should have paid for them you charge for the materials as a whole, the off cuts are used at a latter date even if you have to flood them with a colour.

Are you not charging the off cut to the customer. After all they should be charged for a full sheet if the sign is over a certain size anyway.

How I calculated my prices was work out my cost per Sq/m and then add my appropriate mark up.

So when quoting a sign it was based on the area of the sign.

I was thinking about this over the weekend I really need to look at how to price my work. Printed stuff is fairly straight forward as its more of a product so fixed prices work. Signs and vehicles are more complex.

think to make that sign you have to buy in £x of special materials there is your base cost, if you have off cuts left over and usable its your good fortune when you sell them later.

i do buy a extra sheet as stock now and again for the 4×2 type signs .
