For someone progressing from vinyl cutting to router cutting 1/8inch flat cut letters how easy are these machines too operate for a complete novice? Has anyone heard of omnisign routers? How good are they?

flat cut lettering is simple enough to do using a cnc router. however, you do still have to learn to use the software and there is much more to take into consideration than sending the likes of a cut file to a vinyl cutter.

Yes already on a very steep learning curve just with the vinyl!!! wanted to eventually progress to wood but it is a very expensive piece of machinery to invest in as a hobby before I can give up my day job!! A firm in Sydney sells a make called omnisign [a cheap asian import??] various sizes and prices!!! Although only part of my early research stage yet what would be a good size router to cut 6-9inch letters in 1/8-1/4 inch thick wood?

im not familure with that make but i have heard good reports on a low costing router by "shopbot" i personally dont think they look the most robust router on the go, but some folk swear by them. i looked at the prices too and they are far cheaper than some on the market in the uk.
    maybe worth a look!

Elly, sorry to hear that you feel that way about your business. This is from someone I know through another forum.

    The Dream
A man lay on his bed at the end of his life waiting to die.
His dream came to pay his last respects and bid farewell to the man who had never used it.
As it entered the room the man looked down in shame.
"Why did you not realise me ?" the dream asked.
"Because I was afraid," the man said.
"Afraid of what," said the dream.
"I was afraid I would fail."
"But havent you failed by not attempting to use me?".
"Yes I did, but I always thought there would be tomorrow."
"You Fool!" said the dream"Did it never occur to you that there was only ever today? the moment that you are in right now?
Do you think that now that death is here that you can put it off until tomorrow?".
"No". said the man, a tear gently rolling down his cheek.
The dream was softer now, because it knew that there were two types of pain, the pain of discipline and the pain of regret, and while discipline weighs ounces , regret weighs weighs pounds.
Then the dream leant forward to gently wipe away the tear and said, " You need only have taken the first step and I would have taken one to meet you,for the only thing that ever separated us was the belief in your mind that you couldnt have me".
Then they said goodbye and they both died.

Thanks martin for the words of wisdom!!!! I just go through days where it all seems too hard!! I am a nurse full time and am just dabbling with a few vinyl ideas which have been popular with friends but my dream is to do the lettering in wood.Obviously the cost/setup/area needed and complicated software side of router cutting is a major hurdle even though the response to my idea has been overwhelmingly positive I just dont know where to start!!! I am going to do a course at TAFE so that things which are at the moment as clear as mud! may become more crystal clear!.Maybe when I come to the UK in december I might be able to chat to some fellow board users in the North West area to boost my confidence. For now I listen to the good advice and keep doing my research/business plan cheers :lol1:

Hey Elly, good to remember that little steps are much easier to take than giant leaps. All those little steps can add up to something big over time 😉

    Nice words Martin.

Thanks people but I can’t take the credit myself as it is from a guy called Mark Baker, it was quite strange though because he sent it to me yesterday morning and about half an hour latter when I logged in here I read Elly’s post and it seemed really fitting.
Elly Like Bill says take little steps, may take longer but better than never starting or trying to take huge leaps and giving up because it is to much all at once. If you take small steps from one end and your dream takes small steps from the other you will meet sooner than you may realise.

I started up in business last year (part time) and it was a big leap both financially and in time. Fortunately I have an extremely good grounding in mechanical engineering and Corel. I combined both of these talents with engraving.

I will be learning for years tom come as there is ALWAYS someone you can learn from, novices included – those who are trained are conditioned to think one way, those that are self taught tend to operate "out side the box" and push the boundaries through experimentation and fortunate errors!!!

Using CNC routers will require a knowledge of the software, getting tool paths correct, tool selection and the material being cut.

Be assured there are plenty of people here ready to help and occasionally poke a little fun at some of your questions.

Welcome on board…..and Im all to willing to help with anything I can.

And …………. don’t worry about ‘silly’ questions …………. I’ve been doing this for over 15 years and I still ask stupid questions. No one knows it all …………….. but between us all here we might manage to answer just about everything 😀

Good luck with your new venture.

Elly, they are a great bunch here. Plenty of help, lots of laughs, great friends.

I agree with Marcella. Been doing this for 15 or 16 years, I’m always learning, the trick is being prepared to listen, to explore, and never be afraid to ask questions, nor be afraid to share your knowledge. Its always going to be your decision in the end, but you have years of experience to fall back on here. As your experience grows, you can help others here to avoid the pitfalls that you’ll find along the way.

Reading Martins post reminds me of a dear friend who died last Wednesday. She was Croatian. She never had the opportunity to learn to read or write because she was from the war torn part of town. She raised 3 wonderful children who grew into beautiful people. She sacrificed everything so her kids could have the education she didn’t have.

No one, not even her kids, knew she had a dream. She wanted to write poetry.

At 65, she emigrated to Australia to live with one of her daughters. To fulfill her dream, she learned to read and write Croatian. She mastered that at close to 70.

When she died last week at 75, they read a poem she had written about her own death. Even now, I have tears in my eyes. It was probably the most beautiful poem I’ve read in a long time. Her daughter had 5 years of poems from her mum that she’ll treasure forever.

And it all started with a dream.

I learned two things at her funeral on Monday. 1) nothing is too hard that it can’t be overcome, and 2) don’t under estimate the power of a dream.

For a woman with no education, she taught me a lot.

I have the creative genes ,I have the desire to learn, I may be the oldest in the class!! but this is something I’ve wanted to do since my daughter was born 16years ago!if I dont do it now Inever will 😳 😛

I started my design/vinyl apprenticeship at 33 Elly. When your workmates are in their teens, it can be a bit daunting… but I proved my worth early, so got their respect. It was a bit hard being on offsider for 4 years to a couple of 20 somethings, but I had fun :lol1:

My wife had to tell me to grow up a few times, so I guess some of their bad habits must have rubbed off sometimes 😳
