I finished doing a van last week. I delivered it on Wednesday and it was used for the next few days in the rain. It was also parked outside overnight. By Tuesday water has somehow worked it’s way under any areas where there was an overlap, such as a join between panels, any patches even our company ID sticker.
The strange thing is the water is not between the top panel and the laminate of the panel underneath, it is between the bottom panel and it’s laminate (which I would have thought would be protected from the overlapping panel on top) I assume that the adhesive has done something to the laminate (we use a spray and apply it before applying the vinyl to the vehicle.
I will be talking to my suppliers today and will keep you posted.

Just wondering if anyopne has had this problem before or has any suggestions. Other vehicles we have done this way have not had this problem, but they did not get wet for several weeks.

I had this on a flat metal sign panel which I had faced in vinyl using WET application.
The sign was mounted vertically and it rained within 24hrs.
Next day the vinyl had GIANT blisters full of rain water.
Because of the wet application, the edges hadn’t cured fully and the rain easily entered due to a film of water already existing which allowed a capilliary action to start.

    Thanks Peter,

I don’t think this is the problem though.
I do my applications dry so ther should not have been any problems with the application fluid preventing the adhesive curing.
The van was inside for 2 days after I had fitted the vinyl to give it time to cure properly, and I heated the joins/overlaps as well to help things.

I still have no idea why this happened 😕

    The latest news!!

We removed the rear number plate this afternoon and found the same thing had happened under it. There are bubbles under the laminate which are full of water. There was no overlap of vinyl in this area, so it has nothing to do with the adhesive of the vinyl.

It seems like the bubbles are caused by the vinyl/ink “sweating” under the laminate and causing moisture bubbles. I would have thought if this was the case then the problem would be all through the vinyl though.

Still as lost as ever. 😕

    Hi Gray

Yes we do our own printing. I have a 54″ wide Roland Soljet Pro II. I bought it in November. If you ever need any digital printing done give me a call 0418 121 668.
I am actually located in Launceston (I think my profile says Hobart). I used to live in Smithton so I am very familiar with the North West.

I would like to come and have a look at your set-up sometime, so when I am up that way I will give you a call if thats OK.

    Scott
