We are experiencing a problem with our machine, when vinyl is passing through the pinch rollers it is rucking up and the print head starts touching the print, once this happens the whole job is ruined and we last several meters of full colour print yesterday. We are using Hexis vinyl 5/7 which is a quality product, the print quality is excellent.

We have had our machine for around 6 months and never had this happen before, our supplier suggested that if the vinyl backing has any moist air content then when it hits the heat rollers this may happen.

Has anyone out there experienced the same problem?

Happens on all machines at one time or another , roll tension , loading , dirty rollers , bad material , too much heat etc can cause this.
A few ways to prevent or lessen this are
    1) Cut the front edge of the roll straight – roll the roll tigtly , put it down , draw a line from end to end and cut on the line.
    2) Do not let the machine roll out the vinyl from the roll , manually unroll what you need.
    3) Prefeed the material thru the machine and then back it off
    4) Store the rolls in dry areas so the backing doesnt absorb water.
    5) Make sure the roll has some side to side leeway
    6) Use bulldog clips with small weights on the front of the material to “drag it down properly
    7) Reduce heat to just what you need
    8) prewarm the whole roll , by storing it where it keeps warm , do not use the vinyl ice cold
    9) do what we do , employ a “minder” for the machine , someone who loads , keeps an eye on it etc etc (labour here is relatively cheapish)
    10) check the rollers and grit wheels are ok
    11) NEVER leave the machine standing with the rollers down , this puts flat spots on the roller and can cause hassles.
Its perhaps an idea to invesitgate a new material/brand that is SPECIFIC to digital printers , generally the rolls are rolled with constant tension , have stay flat liners , are not coated with anything and are rolled in a dust/lint free environment.

    Cheers Rodney

We will try these things and I’m sure one or all will help, I think it’s to do with sudden drop in temp here, not that cold yet and the workshop is heated so you get a bit of dampness in the air. We will try keeping the print media indoors. My dad was a traditional printer even used to do type setting by hand and reckons the weather would always make a different to his inks and materials.
