  • Hardened vehicle badge residue, advise on how to remove?

Posted by Elliott j willis on November 5, 2017 at 8:50 am

    Morning All

So in the last few weeks I’ve had 3 vehicle badges on 3 aeperate vans that when removed leave a hard residue that just isn’t coming away no matter how much I scrape, rub or clean. Wierdly it seems to be just one on each van, you would think the manufacturer would use the same adhesive for all badges but apparently not.

Anyone have and experience with this, any tips for getting it off, what do you tell customer if it can’t be removed?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

If it’s the foam tape we use glue and tar remover hope this helps.

    Hi Shaun

No the usual foam tape/aheaive residue is no problem, occasionally just get one that leaves a very hard raised outline, almost need to chip it off!

As Shawn has said, "Tar and Glue remover" soak and leave for 5 minutes, soak again and use and old squeegee and it should come right off. once removed, clean with something like Avery surface cleaner or Isopropynol.

if it is really hard and not breaking down. a faster ways to remove it is use a Toffee Wheel in a cordless drill.
This will whip it off in seconds. you can buy them in most good car paint supply shops. ebay etc cost about £5-£10 each.
you only need the rubber wheel and little drill adapter. you can use any power drill or cordless, but better with a cordless as the power drill is a bit too fast for it.

either way both above are 100% worth having in your fitting box always.

    Thanks Rob

Will definatley get a toffee wheel to try but the residue I’ve been left with is rock hard where the edge of the letters are, not sure if that wheel will shift it, worth a try though.

Will definitely lift it mate. We had similar a few months ago wrapping a brand new Scania truck. Took the badges off and the glue was brick hard. Toffee wheel had it off in seconds. The tar and glue wasn’t doing much at all. which was a first for the tar and glue…

Just ordered one now, probably won’t encounter the hard residue issue for months now but will be good to have it on hand, got rear of a sprinter to wrap this week, badges will need removing so will try the wheel on that. :smiles:
