As some of you know, I live near Mars, PA.
Last month I was commissioned to paint an interior mural in a restaurant there.
I used old photographs like the one here:
    http://www.purvisbros.com/mars/grand07.htm
They are hanging inside the place, and belong to the historical society.
I traced the photos onto transparencies and projected them onto the wall.
I used a technique combining posterizing and an outline taught to me by a Canadian named Dan Sawatsky.
The heads on the 1907 people have been replaced with those of modern-day friends and family of the restaurant owner.
I have about 30 hours into it, and it is 5’x18′. Painted in 1-Shot lettering enamels. It is not historically accurate but it was fun.

I am depressed now Jill. You have so much talent and I feel so inadequate 😥

Well done. I love that sort of thing. Really adds character to a restaurant etc.

    Love it 😉

    Nice work Jill.

Just one question, is there a reason for the splash of colour in what is basically a sepia image?

Artistic license I would call that John 😀

    Thanks for the nice words!
I used the colors to incorporate the colors in the room, besides that I thought sepia in and of itself would turn into a "Bloody puddle of mud" as John Jordan used to say.
Bruno, funny you should say that…

Excellent article 😀 Isn’t Mike Meyers? from Mazeppa…I met him over here at a Letterheads meet in Leicester about 10 years ago?

Indeed Mike Meyer is from Minnesota.
He’s the one who introduced me to the Letterheads back in ’93.
He’s been to quite a few UK meets.
The next big meet is this August in Wales, at David Kynaston’s.
I can’t make it because I am going to a meet in New Brunswick a week earlier.

He was there too…lovely bloke! I recall him doing a marbling demo. I won a set of chisels & we spoke on the phone a while after, but I always seem to be on holiday when the meets are on. Is he still in Llangollen or something like that?

That sounds great…I go on holiday on the 13th 😕 😥 I worked with Neil Meliard in ’87 up in Streatham. Left & worked in Sydney for 6 months…then
he worked at the same place after I came back to the UK…small world!

Other than my visit to Stevo 3 weeks ago, it is the most satisfying experience I’ve had in ages, Lynn!
I could have used a visit from you and Peter…I’d have had you doing wiggly lines like nobody’s business too.

Excellent work Jill… well done! 😉

no wonder your have been so busy lately… 😀

ide imagine it would, but did it take long from start to finish?

  • Jill Marie Welsh

    30 hours start to finish.
    I charged $1500.
It’s probably worth more but it was great community exposure.
The last day, a fellow Letterhead chick/Sign Gal, Bobbie Rochow, drove 2 hours to help me with the lines.
    Thanks for all the comments!
It was so much fun I’d probably have done it for free.

I would say as usual great work but this mural is beyond that compliment, fantastic work sounds a bit closer, just wish I had an ounce of you brush talent.

I feel totally inadequate now as well, I love looking at this sort of thing but it always leaves me wishing that I could do something half as good.

it makes me glad I used to refer to myself as a signmaker and not a sign writer, thats in a totally different league from anything I have ever done.

Jill thanks for sharing the pictures with us all. hopefully it will be there for many years for people to admire.
