after the over the top quibell sign i tried to play things down by going a bit more subtle.
turquoise facia existed. we made an 18mm panel with moulded edge to sit on existing facia. shoe box letters are 18mm medite convexed on router table. faces gilded with 23 1/4 carat gold leaf. secondry text vinyl.
if any of you chaps are interested in these letters either contact myself or i’ll let you have the number of the chap who does then ( i will post numbers if anyone is interested )

sweet as a nut Paul – a good composition and ‘brave’ enough to know when it’s quality not quantity that a job requires 😉

I, for one, would be interested to know about such lettering please…I’m in the middle of refurbishing ‘the shed’ and when finished intend to have several classic new pieces on the walls inclusing gilded champfered (sp?)lettering…

    Just remind me why it’s 23 1/4 carat gold and not 24 carat?…I’m sure I read somewhere there’s a reason for this?….

    more soon

Hi Paul great to see your work verry smart looking, did you gold leaf the letters yourself or were they bought in ready to mount. We dont have the inhouse skills to gold leaf but I would love to use letters like that in future sign projects.
your contact for the letters would be well received

    Regards Neil…….

as far as i’m aware mike 24 carat gold only exists in fairy tales.
all giding is done in house.
my purpose on this planet is to release as much gold leaf back into the wild as possible.!!

for convex and flat cut letters contact:
    Mr Terry Colley
    The Vintage Sign Co.
    tel 0161 494 5089.
( tell him i sent ya)

i’m sure mr broughton has explained the simplicity behind laying leaf.
(my explainations get way too complicated)
.if not, over to you mr broughton

    Great work Paul

Mike: There used to be a Company that did 24 carat (Services Supplies Company in Mid Glamorgan) Don’t know if it is still around.

Generally speaking though the stuff we use (German, English or Italian, depending on the vagaries of the bullion rate) comes around 23 1/4 – 23 3/4

This seems to be sufficiently pure enough to use as it will not tarnish when used externally without lacquering.
