    Hello there,

My name is Danny, and my girlfriend happens to be Namibian ( she is from Ondangwa ). We met a few years ago, when she came over travelling.

I’ve never been, but do plan to in the future. It looks so beautiful.

Welcome to the boards. The help and advice from this place has helped us out many, many times!

Anyway, if I ever do make it to Namibia we’ll have to meet up for a (drink1)

    Rodney, like, Slaapstad, huh?

Good to see somebody I can relate to on the board. We buy the bulk of our supplies from Cape Town based suppliers. They are the closest to us, only about 2000 km away! I see from your previous postings that you operate a few (!) laser engravers. The one we’ve got seems like a high tech toilet to me. I’ll definately need your help to get this thing productive! I currently use it to make stamps ( about 10 per week) and custom trophys (less than 10 per week!) What a waste of a couple of hundred grand![/quote]

    Yeh , Slapstad it is!!
Who do you buy from? Maizeys?

What laser do you have? Using it for stamps etc is a severe waste , we have made 3 stamps in 6 years of lasering , PAID , OVERDUE and All goods to be paid for on collection.

    Some good laser boards are
http://www.worldofengraving.com (has a live chat thing)
    http://www.engravingetc.org
    http://www.sawmillcreek.org
and there is a yahoo group for laser engraving , but its pretty much the richtersveld.
I do a ton of custom trophies etc , have a look at my site
    http://www.tokerbros.co.za
Im also often on IRC if you ever use it , if you want to chat about anything.

    Hi Rodney,

We’ve got a Mercury LaserPro. I dont know how many Watts, and dont care. This thing is my personal Red Headed Stepchild! I may have exagerated about how little we do on the machine (we do engrave some DB box strips for electricians, funeral boarrds etc) – but still, it seems like a terribly slow machine, especially when cutting Perspex. I will check out the sites you suggested later tonight.

Your company name sounds familiar. I’m sure I saw it one some or other Happy 21st type thingy somebody braught in to have engraved.

We do buy from Maizeys! Lucky guess? Apparently they plan to appoint a Namibian distributor (in Windhoek) Chances are I will still be able to land stuff quicker from ZA

The mecrury is an excellent machine , can do it all , yours is probably 25 or 30 watts which is fine , we upgraded to the faster Explorers and were sorry , the mercuries are far more reliable. There cant be many laser engravers in Namibia , you can make a ton of dosh if you the only one or 2 around.

Would have most likely been a trophy with our name , I dont do 21st stuff , waste of time IMHO.

We havent had the greatest support from the suppliers of our GCC’s lately. (engraving supplies) I do know a lot about the mercuries/drivers/maintenance if you are having problems tho.

As far as I know, there are 3 Lazer Engravers in Namibia: Ours in Walvis Bay, One in Windhoek, and one in Otjiwarongo (Central North) What is the life expectancy on the lazer? I dont know where our handbook is. Its been missing in action since I started here. Will doing a lot of rubber stamps cause any damage? We do them daily, but only clean the machine weekly or so. This is propably not right! (PS: just finished cutting some white perspex – 3mm – 100% power, 0,2% speed. It dit not cut through! I used to cut 5mm at this speed)

Thats exceptionally slow , a 25 watt mercury will cut at 100% power and like 1.4-2 % speed , NOT 0.2
Either your optics are really dirty or damaged , the tube is on its way out or the thing is badly aligned , this is a potent machine if used well and can make you a LOT of money , well over R2 grand a day.
You can download firmware , drivers , manuals etc at
    http://www.jorlink.com/page.aspx?page_id=49
    and get more tips at

Rubber stamsp are a waste of time , smelly and messy and slow and not at all profitable , they also make the morrors and lens very dirty , cleaning once a week is not good enough.
A laser tube should last 10-20 000 hours

You really should have the machine checked over , they R150 000 machines
