Here’s a pic of the gold leaf job I was picking some brains about a couple of weeks ago. It was done in reverse on the back of this glass door. Used a vinyl stencil, gold leaf then backed up with black vinyl. Did two of these.

    Thats really nice Marcella.

How do you do it – do you paint it on or just force the gold leaf to the edges of the stencil? Also how does it stick to the glass? Would be really interested to know.

In short Russ, a vinyl stencil was applied to the glass first. Then varnish was applied into the pattern. The gold leaf was applied to the varnish when ready and when all was dry a vinyl backing applied behind it.

    Nice one Marcella!
Do you remove the vinyl stencil after the gold is applied? or before?

Marek – the stencil was removed while the varnish was tacky. Then the gold leaf was applied

nice one marcella…looks very celtic design .I only have done it the old way which is very time consuming belive me (geliteen capsules melted down and applied as a size ) guiders cusion ..lifting it off the cusion with the tip any drafts ..a nightmare !! especially if its in a solicitors office where theres people coming and going 😀 😀 The way youve done it totally eliminate having to use loose gold..transfer is easier you dont have to worry about drafts 😀

Marcella i know balck is the correct colur to back it up with i think the stuff we used was black japan .Ive always thought that was a strange colour to use because any breaks in the gold would show up …Was it just the mask vinyl you used 😀 😀

Brian I did the artwork and cut the vinyl stencils, Chris (signwriter who sometimes does bits and pieces for me) did the gold leaf part. But I just used a low tack vinyl for the mask, it worked perfectly well. There was one other window done too, but it was backed up in shamrock green vinyl, that looked good too. The pub has had others glass done before that was painted behind the gold leaf, but it was flaking of so that’s why I suggested vinyl behind it instead. It seems to have worked OK.

whatever way youve done it it looks terific marcella a great alternative to all the hassle.I suppose you would only get one chance with putting the vinyl on the back as if it was misplaced and you had to reline theres everychane you could rip the gold off

Looks absolutely brilliant Marcella, have to have a go at that. Lovw the celtic motif, classy, not the usual kitsch rubbish. Well done.
