Glue for locators
Posted by Warren Beard on August 31, 2007 at 6:14 pmHi All
Doing my first flat cut raised letters (mirror finish) and want to know what adhesive you guys use to bond the locator on to the Dibond. I know if you use the wrong adhesive it can cause the Dibond to get "dimples" on the face from the grab.
What and where can I get the correct / best adhesive for this.
Thanks all
Cheers

Warren I need some mirror di-bond letter for next week and will order them Monday can I ask why you don’t just get your supplier to apply these and get a paper template

Hi Rich
I did not know they applied them, I though they just sent them out as a set. I have not ordered them yet but got a quote including locators and template and thought it came loose.
I suppose I will ask how much it will be to apply them for me.
Good point, thanks.
I would however still like to know what to use for just in case.
Thanks Rich

Mate they have to glue them on for you to make the correct paper template so your problem is sorted

Just about every supplier will affix the locators and have a proper template with all of the positions pre-marked ready for mounting. If they don’t, change suppliers it’s what you’re paying for.
Re: glue. Tensol is the usual glue used for acrylic letters, and I’ve used evostik ‘serious stuff’ before on flat cut aluminium letters that I repaired.
Just don’t use superglue or epoxy (araldite)…they won’t hold for long.

Thanks Rich / Dave
Like I said I just presumed they came loose so will make sure they will be attached when ordered.
At least that solves that problem.
cheers guys

warren, just to clarify, if they include locators or are an option, they will be fixed to the letters, all you need to do is fix the female receptors to the substrata

Thanks Peter
less for me to worry about.
I was looking at the tutorial about gluing the locators on and that also made me think I had to do it but the tutorial was using acrylic and I was not sure about Dibond.
Glad I don’t have to do it anyway.
cheers

We have the same problem with fabricating the mirror finish dibond. The problem is the 2 part acrylic adhesives (techbond etc) give off heat when they cure, soften the core of the dibond and create the dimple on the face. When we have had to fix locoators to the back we have cut small acrylic squares about 20 x 50mm, put vhb on them and stuck them to the back of the letter, then we stick the locator on to the acrylic with tensol. Its a bit messy and with a lot of letters can be long job, but it gets round the problem.

Hi Guys,
We tend not to use Di Bond. We opt for the amari plastics option, Reynobond. They also sell an elasticated adhesive which when used with locators doesn’t give the dimple.
In the past i have had Di Bond and Gutbond delaminate during the warm summer months and we went through a whole range of adhesives trying to find a solution. Reynobond and the glue Amari supply proved to be very reliable.

Hi Brad
Thanks for the info, any idea what the glue is called from Amari, I don’t seem to have any on my price list so would like to ask them about it.
cheers

Hi Warren,
ISR703. Adhesion qualities on ACM’s rated excellent.
From memory it’s around £7 per tube.
