Posted by Paul Rollason on June 4, 2005 at 9:10 am

Hi all of you north of the border

For some mad reason (it seemed like a good idea a year ago) I will be cycling for John O Groats to Lands End in September.

Most of my route keeps me away from urban areas but I do have to go through Glasgow.

I will be comming from Arden and heading towards Dumfries so I need a little local knowlege through the city and maybe a cup of coffee.

    thanks

Sorry Paul can’t help you with this one, I’m in Lancashire, but if your journey brings you through these parts then feel free to stop off for a brew. Good luck in your quest.

I am now tho beginning to question your sanity, as I am sure you are.

Anyway best of luck and hope all goes well

    Cheers Andy

I will be travelling through Lancashire so I will get your number off you nearer the time.

I could do a tour of the sign shops of the UK. 😉

Could be worse, I once saw a couple on TV who spent their holidays visiting every ASDA in Britain. Now that is sad. 🙄

    Thanks Lynn

    Where abouts are you

I don’t really know why I’m doing it, I do cycle quite a bit and it’s a classic goal.

I am also doing it to raise money for Shelterbox

just had a thought Paul as you are in the lands end area would it not be better to start there and finish at john o groats at least you could rest on the train/plane on the way home you would need the rest more after the ride than before it wouldn’t you 🙄

Good on you Paul and all the best for your long journey …. If you pass by Herefordshire I’ll throw you a jammie dodger as you cycle by …. or you could always just pop in and take in the views of our unit on your UK sign shop tour and have a nice cuppa.

    😀

I know we are just up country from you but when you get into Somerset and you need a rest, we live in Bruton.

    Keep us updated on things.

    Thanks for all your support.

Shelterbox is a charity that sends a box containing everything to help ten people survive after a disaster.

The box contains a ten person tent, ten sleeping bags, equipment for cooking and water treatment, first aid etc.

They are based about ten miles from where we are but their aid id global.

    check out their website http://www.shelterbox.org

I will be doing this alone with all my camping equipment and no back up.

I plan to do the trip in nine days (100 miles a day) so there will not be too much time for sight seeing.

The reason why I am going in the opposite direction than is traditional is because I would like to get the difficult travelling (getting me and all my kit to the tip of Scotland) out of the way and from then on, every peddle turn will take me closer to home.

    Should be fun

I will post my basic route soon so people can see if I will pass near by

Good luck with the bike ride Paul 😀

If you’re anywhere near Leigh, you could always pop in for a brew, or a sneaky lift up the motorway if you’re really knackered :noeveil:

Sure you’ll do well with it, but careful if you go through Liverpool, if you stop for too long, they’ll have your wheels! 😮 :lol1:

    Thanks guys

I think I’m going to miss out Glasgow altogether by getting the ferry across to aran and then back to the mainland.

It’s a few more miles but I avoid a big city and get to visit Oban and aran

What do you think, good or bad idea?

    Hi Paul,
I’d miss the Arran leg out, come down the Great Glen alongside Loch Ness and through Fort William. If you don’t mind a bit of a climb go through Glencoe. Once your up there it’s down hill all the way(almost!) to Crianlarich. Then a nice long, mainly flat run along Loch Lomond to Glasgow. Assuming your reasonably fit, the run from Fort William to Glasgow takes about 6 hours.
If your planning on stopping at Glasgow, I’d be happy to put you up for the night and then get you back on route in the morning.
Give me a call on 0141 429 4240 if I can be of any help.
    Regards,
    John.

    Cheers John

You sound like a bit of a cyclist yourself

I,m just a bit worried about navigating through the city and I know the Arran route is an alternative.

    Paul,

if you do the Arran route give me an e-mail….only 12 miles from ferry in Largs…….just across from Millport, Isle of Cumbrae, got 2 Sea Kayaks in the garage for an early morning paddle then I’ll race you to Ardrossan on the bike..

    Cheers

Paul, if you are in Oban give us a shout, I’ll put the kettle on

    dave@obansignstudio.co.uk

More used to cycling down hill myself, although I did cycle from South Yorkshire to Skye and back in my younger days think we did 60 miles a day, so 100 is pushing it.

    Best of luck

    Cheers all

Andrew I am in the middle of building a canadian canoe at the moment out of 4mm ply

My next project will be a sea kayak, I’ve just received a brochure from Chesapeake Light Craft http://www.clcboats.com and there is some nice stuff in there.

I will give you a shout Dave if I go the Oban-Arran route

Cheers Andy, I will have to start collecting phone numbers of all the people on the boards who I will pass near by so I can pop in and say hello and get some directions.
