  • Ghost Sign – London

Posted by Robert Lambie on February 10, 2006 at 9:04 pm

I was in London recently and as ever, i was armed with my camera.
having seen andrew boyle post some of his snaps, i thought ide do the same. 😳 yes of course we both have pics of other things besides “signs” 😳

this picture is obviosly a very old ghost sign. i spotted it coming out the back of my hotel to my car. it was surrounded by modern buildings, so i think its days are numbered 😕

    love the roo one jill.
i never thought about ghost signs till i came across sign musium a while back. ever since, i have appreciated them…

my thoughts when looking at them is… “we are faced today with the task of creating a sign” looking at the OLD works of art we see dotted around, makes you think with the technolegy of computers tc today. how did these guys magange creating signs years PLUS AGO…. kinda puts us all to shame 😕

and to think some of us “think” we have talent!

Here’s another cool one. This was once The Stanley Theater. Saw Bob Dylan, Adam Ant, & Gary Numan there (not at once) Now it is the Benedum Center, but they still have the cool old electric sign from the 1920s.

jill, i must take a picture of barra lands in glasgow. its the biggest, “oldest” neon sign i know of, has to be 50’x100′ in size. looks crap during the day, but “amazing” at night. the whole place is getting pulled down soon.

    crying shame 😕

http://www.forgotten-ny.com/SIGNS/SIGNS … nhome.html is a good link to more too

Makes you stop and think about the true talent of these guys, most would have been done on hardood planks via a pulley system from the roof. If any know John Jordan from OZ at your letterhead meets, he can tell you some stories about this sort of thing. He wrote am article in one of our trade mags in memory of another old painter and friend, and it was trully an enlighting experience.

Some good, some bad, some ugly,
Is it not the same today?
Old does not always mean good.

i think some old are crap too… but i do think some old tacky ones represent a certain style/time from the past. which makes them although badly designed, classics! well in my eyes anyway 😕 :lol1:

It’s hard to think we’ll be looking back at now and laughing at the clothes, especially since fashions seem to be cyclical, we’ll all be wearing platforms and those high waisted flared trousers and laughing at what we were wearing in the “00’s”
