I have a couple of questions

first is there anyone out there using an edge with signlab?

If so. Is it possible to make solid colours (Duotone) by mixing spot colours? This may seem a stupid question when I tell you that I have a spectratone book. The problem I have is that the colours always come out very grainy and nothing like the colour that I am trying to make. I have spoken to the Spandex tech people but as they sell Omega they tell me they don’t know anything about Signlab.

The other thing I need to achieve is overprinting. I have printed yellow onto some clear vinyl but when applied to a green surface it doesn’t show up very well.

Forgot to say it’s an EdgeI

The signlab thermal Package is very good,
it makes overprints and bleeds/traps easy.
you can create tint and duo tone pallettes.
And also id very good for creating double sided stickers, I ran an edge 2 with signlab for 4 years, and found it better to use than omega (just preference)

Thanks for the reply Peter. Do you have any tips or do you know who to ask or is it worth going on a course at Spandex?

    Shaun
first thing would be to get hold of a demo copy of sign lab Thermal
and if see if you get on with it. Cadlink offer online training, but I have never tried it, they also offer training at the Roland academy, but not sure if they cover the thermal package. They also have quite a few video tutorials on their website.
and of course these boards are a good source of info

    😀

    Hi Shaun,
If you print onto clear without giving it a white priming coat then your print is going to look washed out against other colours you will only get accurate reprentations of colour if you back up with white, as for your prints being grainy could it be that you are sending colours to the edge as process rather than spot is it a halftone pattern you are seeing.
I found that the Spandex course was very good and i had a few eureka moments, but i was at the time a beginner in digital print, you will find that this course will cater for Omega, i am not sure that they will train you in signlab.

Sorry Shaun misunderstood the initial question ,
have to go out now, but if you already have sign lab the duotone swatches can be made if you click file/spot swatches, to overprint you need to have the halftone palette in view in signlab and assign the overprint to the top colour, you can also switch on a cross hatch so you know its an overprint

Thanks Peter now I’m confused 😕

Mart. This may sound dumb but do I use spot white as a primer and does the primer just apply behind the print colours?

    Shaun,
you use the white as a primer, but you need to reduce the primer so you don’t get the white showing through at the edge of the print.
you can also use the white as an overprint to block out the print if its reverse printed onto clear.
all you do is reverse the order of print, so the white goes down last.

    Still confused?

    Getting there slowly Peter.

How do I reduce the primer?

Shaun, in the print and cut set up,
click the primer and highlight tab, then adjust as required.

Are you new to signlab, and if so did you not get a demo disc with it?

I’m happy to help but you do need a basic course by the sound of it,
how long have you had your gerber?

    Peter.

Started using Edge in June after basic tuition, as for signlab started using it about a year ago but was only showed the very basics. When I came here at the end of June I was taught a lot more (although it may not sound like it) and at that time started using the Edge.

I am thinking of upgrading to Signlab 8 but not sure if there will be much benefit as I don’t have an ink printer. However I would get training if I upgrade. I have spoken to Ray @ Signlab several times and he has been very helpful but I think a training course on Signlab and the Edge would be beneficial but it’s time and where to go.

    Shaun,
I would make some enquiries about the Roland academy, in Walsall I’m almost certain they do a signlab course there, and it’s only just over an hour away from you.
