• Fuel Cards

    Hi

Anyone got a separate card that they use for fuel in a designated chain of outlets in return for savings?

    I’ve accepted one to try.

The guy said it would be cheaper and they would let me know by text every week what the price was.

At first he said it would be 1.26 which I thought; fair enough! But then when the card arrived I was told it would be 1.31 which was slightly dearer than the fore court.

When I told him this he said oh wait I minute, then, let me get back to you.

I waited a week and then got a text telling me the price was 1.09!

I though f#*k, thats pretty good, that will save me 500 quid over the year if it stays like that.

What a change of tune, I was ok with 1.26 they then tried 1.30 and when I brought it up it dropped down to 1.10.

What do you make of that?

    regards

    James

I’d say wait until your first bill arrives!

Salesmen will say anything. If the £1.10 isn’t in writing then be wary. A text just doesn’t cut it in my opinion – so easy for a saleman to say ‘oh, that was meant to be £1.20 but my finger slipped’.

I can’t understand how it could be £1.10 as most forecourt garages can’t buy it for that – most only make 5p a litre at best if competing with the supermarkets, may be 10p a litre if out in the back of beyond.

Some cards say ‘save UP TO 10p a litre’…

I think the proof will be when you get your statement.

I remember many years ago ‘Ben Scammel’ was trying to get thousands, if not millions of people to sign up for a fuel card (PipelineCard) – all you got after YEARS of him collecting email addresses was marketing rubbish about unrelated products. Nothing illegal – but what a marketing coup.

Yes, I’m wary about something for nothing….

8 yes ago my old employer got bp cards, on average I was doing around 500-750 miles a week, filling up twice a week. It was a pain using bp only and having to go out of my way so we wasted hours every week between 8 on the road. Turned out it also cost about 5p a ltr more than the forecourt so we dropped them. I think we tried another card too, well some did, I just put it on my debit card when I needed it but, they didn’t keep them long either.

Best off spending £50 in tesco and getting 5p a ltr off on the pumps when they have the offer on, saves me about a £5 a fill, and it’s already about 5p cheaper than here in town, double saving!

I tried them and gave up after a short while. As Hugh said, you’ll be restricted to certain garages and that can be a pain. Fair enough you might have a station near you but if you’re away from home and need to fill up……. you’ve got the hassle of finding a garage that’ll accept the card.

We also found that they were often charging more per litre than the forecourt prices.

Depends on the deal you’re getting but it didn’t work out for us. If you are getting it for £1.09 a litre let me know the details!!!!

We used them on our motorcycle training school. Wasn’t cheaper and they charged a monthly fee for each card so that added to the cost.
Went back to debit card instead.

I tried them years ago with motorpass. The fees got increasingly higher, and petrol stations also started charging a % on top to use the card. Then, some stations started refusing the card.

I use a debit card now, although I have an account at our local servo as well. I only use the debit card if I am traveling, as using the account gives me extra time before I have to pay.

    I use a Shell card,
the per litre costs are based on a national average, and can be used at BP stations as well.
a monthly vat invoice is easier too than totting up all the individual bills.
    no hidden or extra charges

So James…. the 1.09 + 20% VAT = £1.31… as they said.. Looks like a no brainer that deal.

i loved my shell card 😥 saved masses of time with the one invoice every month, which avoided the painstaking counting all the wee receipts (some got lost) it was slightly cheaper, and I claimed the vat back anyway…so yes I would highly recommend one 😀
