Right, understood, thought it should be OK as i hear that eBay has bought that firm already.
If they iron out the wrinkles it will give BT etc a run for their money.

    Skype works for me

I’ve added my skype user name onto my email signature and it’s amazing how many people use it!

People always like something for nothing 😉

i dont think its actually 100% free guys… ok its near to zilch but its something like 0.1p a minute or something daft like that…
roll on 2007 we will all be using it.
same as broadband really, andrew and i were speaking about this. he mate is using 10meg (hes part of a telecom company on beta version) says its no different browsing as is 2meg but downloads are instant. in china etc ive heard they have something daft like 100meg! 😮

I’ve never tried the VoIP but know people that do.
Your right about he browsing though Rob, pages come up very fast when you get the attention of the server, you just have to wait a while before you do get it’s attention (not a technical term I know)

    Rob,

Skype to Skype calls are totally free, zip, diddly squat, gratis!

It doesn’t cost a penny to register, download the software and use the service.

Should you wish to make calls to a land line or a mobile number then yes, you have to charge your account with 10 Euros, but even then the call rates are insignificant.

I made a 30 minute call to Australia earlier this week and it cost just over 30p.

Give it a go it’s free – trust me, I play with vinyl 😮

I just helped someone go on Skype, he said it was perfect. Cut his call costs down considerbly to Norway.
He bought a handset USB phone, works a treat.

Also, I read on the wireless Handset that you can plug that into BT and USB on the PC running Skype and if the caller is using is using Skype, you can press a button and it transfers the caller over skype. Ideal.

However I have spoken to people over MSN voice/webcam, that works fairly well. Also, a few members here I have spoken with over another form of voice comms, again that works well.

    Hi All

As of 12th September, Skype was taken over by ‘E-Bay’. Will things change?

    Regards

Try http://www.voipcheap.co.uk their calls to land lines are free at the moment to both this country and many locations abroad. You can try it (with a one minute call duration) and if you like it open an account with £5 and then talk for as long as you like. (There is a one hour cut off, just re-dial) I doubt if this service will stay free for long but when they do start charging like Skype it will only be the odd penny per minute.
As Peter says it’s not great for business calls (one or two issues) but I use it for cheaper calls to mobiles and long free chats with my brother in the south of France.

There are several companies all waiting to come onto the market to enable us to use our PC’s as telephones to talk to each other, and just as broadband has almost become the norm, or is certainly as cheap if not cheaper than dial up was only a short time ago, so too will this, although as already mentioned Skype is free.

My parents live in South Korea and most of my immediate family in Oz and they have been using Skype for quite some time and have got themselves set up with decent microphones and speakers so that the sound quality is excellent and has moved away from the very tinny and echoey voice coming down the line of a short time ago.

Just to clarify a acouple of points.
With Voice Over IP you do not need your pc to be switched on, all you need is an internet connection. Normal phones are used, but you can use the pc like it can be used and has been for years, as a phone, but most people have a problem carrying it around with them.
perhaps this link will explain better
