  • Font ID – Old number plate font

Posted by Marcella Ross on November 8, 2006 at 4:01 pm

    Calling all font anoraks!!!!!! 😀

Can anyone ID this font? This was the font used on the old London Buses, although one of these has been hand lettered, the other isn’t. My customer restores old buses and the exact style is imperitive.

If anyone knows what it is and let me know – great! I thought it was helvetica but no, nor is it arial. 😕

    thank you!

Sorry Marcella, can’t help you, but it was never going to be Arial.

Unless they’re Routemasters, the buses would have been running around long before Arial was introduced.

Mmmmmm ……. that’s the new number plate font George. Just googled it.
Unless there’s an ‘old’ version of Charles Wright??????????

Nick, that’s not bad but the ‘Y’ is a wee bit different.

yes it is a bit, do you just need to re-make the old ones? maybe better to vector them?

unfortunately not Nick, it’s for a different number altogether and they have no plate 😕

do you have to use the same font? there is no fixed font for old plates.

My customer said that this style was used on the London Buses, a specific style, according to him. I’ve had a look through pages on the web about London Buses, but so far haven’t found any info on the letter style. 🙁

At the minute, one he’s needing just now is KYV 781X

He’s very particular that the ‘8’ is exactly as shown. He says that’s quite important …………..
    Hope he’s not ripping the p*ss 😕 😀

Marcella, you have all you need to copy but the 1 and that would probably be straight?

You’re right Nick, but God help me when he’s looking for another!!!! 😀
Lets just hope that next weeks he doesn’t need MWR 346G :lol1:

Thought I’d try for the actual font first, but it’s not looking good. 🙁

No its a hard one, cannot find a font with all the right letters/numbers 🙁 it may not be a font at all, may just be made for the buses at the time, but I think I have seen it before on old plates so keep looking.

    Nick,

I’ve had a good look through all my fonts on my hard drive and also on all my discs…… But I’ve not got it.
I do however have Omega but not installed on this pc, if that’s where you found it let me know and I’ll install it to see if it’s there.

I think I’ll get away with that font, the ‘8’s are good, only very small differences if you look closely, but more likely to be whoever hand lettered one of these is just a smidgen out. I think my guy will go for this.
Thanks for all your help once again.

    Marcella 😀

Was in a services just off the M6 today and there is a chap selling number plates out of a trailer. The services are also a truckstop. I saw this font there on an embossed plate like the old type. I’m going there again tomorrow if you want me to get his details, let me know. He would be able to supply the finished thingumijig for you.

Sorry to stick a spanner in the works, but……

KYV 781X. 1982? Shouldn’t that be on reflective plates?

    For authenticity, if not legality.

    Dave,
any info from that guy would be good!

John you’re right it is 1982 but apparently the london buses have special dispensation to use the old type! The first thing we said was that it was an old number.

no, you were correct! 😀 If it was on any other vehicle it would be reflective!

Went to services and had a word with the chap there and asked him what the font was but he doesn’t know. He just has the brass mats for embossing the plates. 🙁

But I explained the problem and he can supply you the plates ready done and may even give a discount if you say you saw his link on UKSB.
