  • Flex cutting but not weeding well

Hi guys I hope you lot can help. I’ve been pulling what’s left of my very few hairs on my head whilst I attempt to do a very basic job of cutting flex vinyl from Mdp. The problem is they cut but and the end of some letter it leaves a tab meaning weeding is a nightmare. My letters on some areas are about 1cm high so quite small but I have cut this size no problem before.

I have changed the blade the blade holder 45 and 60degree blades cutting strip. It cuts the test cut fine and normal also with regular vinyl it’s on flex vinyl the rubbery material almost seems like it needs a second cut or it’s like cutting stops just shy of completing some letters. For example it’s cutting a number 7 and it will Leave one side tabbed and connected. I don’t get what I’m
Doing wrong I have done all colabirations on my machine which is a Roland XR640. And cut flex with no issues before I’m stumped?? Obviously the material with the problem is just flex vinyl. I’m wondering is there a way to force the cut to overlap at the end?? Doubt it but
Someone must have gone through this in the past?
Kind regards in advance and please no repeat questions like try replacing the blade etc all above has been done and several time with different blades etc

    Kind regards
    Mike

Have you changed the off-set values in your cutting program to match the blade?, just a suggestion.

yes I did it was already set to .250 from memory which is the default for a 45degree blade apparently? I wonder if reducing it to 0 would allow more overlap??

    Thank you

Probably find the material bunching up in front of the knife travel so not completing the loop
If you are using heat may add to the problem

Hi Chris thank you. No bunching up as far as I can see but I did keep the heaters on as in the past that has helped with cuts. But being the first time I’ve used this material you maybe onto something as the heat would make more rubbery which is not what I need. I’ll look into it tomorrow. I have two meters worth one trying to weed. I think it’s pointless wasting hours when if done properly and setup correctly it would take less time. Just frustrating because in some cut prior to this run it was fine but they were larger letter so the small tabs that get left rip without notice.

Maybe try a new knife blade?

Hahaha Phil!!! Tried it but what is odd when cutting my white flex material no issue at all so I assume the dark navy blue for some reason that makes no sense is either thicker or more rubbery. I don’t know ??
I think I will lust laser cut the damn stuff!! 😉

When I cut laminated prints with a blunted knife it leaves tabs just as you have described, yet is ok with unlaminated prints. A new knife solves the problem for me even though the old knife is still useful for cutting unlaminated prints – so I’m assuming the extra thickness is what causes the problem

The problem Phil is these are not laminated as its t shirt flex vinyl which is very easy to cut normally. But maybe the navy flex is thicker than the white I have no way of telling. I’ve tried replacing all parts that would wear such as blade first to no avail.

Which program you using Micheal….? I know that in Flexi it has an overcut option so the blade runs over a wee tad to make sure the cut is complete.

The over cut option would be ideal but I’m using versaworks at the moment. ;(

I think I may try a different stock in blue see if like the white it cuts better??
    Thanks for your suggestions

Try cutting in two or even three passes, and reduce the force on the blade.

Cheers Simon I tried that and works better but second or third pass leaves a slight miss of cut leaving a string of vinyl because the second pass is just out.
Think I have explained that in a long winded way?
