Well guys and gals, this is my first ever attempt at using flat cut lettering. And I think it went pretty well, I learnt lots for my next job using these, I had fun doing it too. It was nice to do a different project and create a different finish. The customer loves it, hes very happy. Which is as ever the main thing. But also I am just as happy to achieve this. I have been going i guess nearly 2 years now, as a signmaker, and with this job i feel like im reaching the next step in my business. I think I can start to offer much more now. Thanks to Hugh for his tips they helped a lot. And thanks to you guys for all your help and inspiration, as a self taught signmaker, you guys have helped me a lot. Cheers, Matt

P.s. I used 5mm black acrylic letters, supplied by smart group, as the guys hugh recommended couldnt do it quick enough, but i’ll try them next time hugh. locators and templates supplied, and templates i stuck to hardboard and then drilled through this.

Matt…it’s always good to get a job like this under your belt…confidence grows as does your portfolio..

I’m sorry but I’m going to be critical……. the line spacing looks cramped on the main sign….it looks like there’s more spacing between the letters than there is between the lines.

I would have dropped the "free house" text further off the name aswell

It looks better on the smaller one but I think it could still have had a touch more space between the lines

Customer is happy though so he’s the one that counts

thanks for your comments, i agree totally, the free house is a little close, I dont remember being that close when i laid out the design in flexisign, but there were some template issues, as is want in the middle, but i didnt alter the vertical spacing though. Its all good tips for next time though.

The spacing is a bit off but it is well readable.
    Here’s a stupid question:
    What is a free house?

thanks for going easy on me jill 🙂

a free house is a pub that has no particular franchise, i guess is the best way to put it, they are not controlled over which beers they can sell etc.

i think i have explained that right,

thanks for the comments guys, and thanks nicola, for that last comment especially.
The way i see it, criticism is good. I am only 22 years old, I have been doing only nearly two years now. As I said I learnt a lot from these boards. and You guys are the people who inspire me. The people who have big thriving businesses, doing good quality signmaking, thats where i want to be. I love doing this job, even though i have hard times with not much work, the times like now when im stacked out, easily make up for it, and prepare me for the day when i will be stacked out everyday hopefully 🙂

forgot to say, sign was in Northiam, in East Sussex, about 20-30 mins from my place. The pub is on a railway crossing for a steam railway, saw and smelt the trains going by all day, nothing like that burning coal smell.
