  • Fixing steel letters direct to Limestone?

Posted by Myles Brewer on February 10, 2011 at 10:47 am

    Hi All,

Has anyone any experience of fixing stainless steel lettering direct to limestone fascias.

No drilling allowed, Max height of letters is 340mm with 50mm returns & 10mm foam-ex back to letters, so essentially fixing foam-ex to stone.

My intention was to use VHB foam tape as initially I was told shop front was granite, would limestone be similar enough? I haven’t actually seen it yet, but presuming it’s a smooth finish.

    Regards
    Myles

Limestone is a very different type of material, very porous and pretty soft. Think you are going to really struggle to find a way to fit the letters you want to it.

    Hi martin,

Thanks for that, I suspected I may run into problems with this.

It’s actually a job I’ve been asked to do by a local Designer who organises shop refits, mainly for Pharmacies. The job is about 5 hours drive away & obviously I will be doing a site survey before we proceed, but he’s pushing for a quote right now, but without seeing it I’m nervous about quoting without a bit more info on possible pitfalls or options for fitting without drilling into the surface (if that’s an option at all)

He assures me that he’s had other sign fitters who have mounted in this way to limestone before & that it is possible, but it’s not something I have any experience in & I am not going to go with it if there is any doubt about the fixing as it’s a long way to go if it goes pear shaped 😮

Myles, sure someone will have a better answer for you, if it’s limestone and you aren’t allowed to drill that may well be because the building is listed. I wouldn’t be happy doing any quote without first doing a site survey.
If your being pushed and want the job you could always put in a quote with a note that says the price is dependant on site survey.

Yep I actually just did that now Martin.

I don’t think it’s listed, I think it’s just a new shop front. I haven’t yet spoken directly with the customer yet, but when I do I will be interested to see why no drilling allowed, because if they’re going with stainless lettering then it’s not like it’s a temporary sign which may have to be changed in a couple of years, therefore the holes becoming an issue.

    Hi Myles,
we have loads of limestone facing over here! we have used no more nails before, it sticks really well but does leave a mark when removed? limestone really crumbles when you drill it, and if you want stuff to stay put we use chemical fixings. good luck

    Hi Dan,

By the sound of it then, some sort of adhesive may actually be better than drilling

Personally Myles with something like built up stainless letter which may be quite heavy then I would drill and use a chemical fastening.

Yes, Martin for a belt & braces job, I think your right.

I think I’ll have to discuss with the customer why exactly they want no drilling
