    Hi All

As a one man business I unfortunately sometimes have to turn work away that is "over my head" in this case though I would like to find a solution as I have come across similar obstacles before.

This picture shows the current sign and how it is fixed, they have taken over the shop next door and they want a new sign to run the span of the 2 shops, as you can see the wall is at different levels and has them across the width of both shops (probably why the old sign is built up on wooden battens etc)

Any ideas, tips etc that can solve my problem of fitting a sign tray to this?

    cheers

    Warren

I would make a steel frame, this can be as simple or complicated as you want it to be.
I would start with a frame to mount the tray on, then make extendable legs by welding 25mm square tubing to the frame and then use a smaller tube inside that tube to take up the imperfections in the wall. Then when extended to their final position lock them in place with a bolt through both tubes. That is the simplified explanation, see pics in these threads.

Thanks Mike, that seems like a good option.

built one very similar to mikes shown only two weeks ago Warren.

made my own brackets from 2" x 2" L-Shaped Steel Angle, welded together.
10mm holes drilled in the brackets and using Thunderbolts, screwed them into the wall. very easy and very solid.

if you dont have welding fascilities im sure the local blacksmith will make them up for you very cheap.

Those Thunderbolts are the best thing I found a while ago, a supplier supplies them with their swing brackets and I had to double check with them what hey were and how to use them 😳 Was very unsure the first time but now always have 2 boxes of them in my tool box for fitting big stuff, I love them.

Anyway back to topic, welding is going to be an issue for me, the measuring is also going to be well tricky as there isn’t easy access as there are underground shops below with stairs etc at all different levels as well. I already told the customer it’s either a cherry picky job (although on one of the busiest road in town 😕 ) or scaffolding the whole front up to the sign level. The issue is this would only be done when fitting but I need to measure of and with all the different length protrusions it’s going to be a hassle.

Getting accurate measurement is going to be tricky too, like Mike’s idea of adjustable legs and then fix them, will take the guess work out of it and as long as they are placed correctly then should be fine.

Just need to find a blacksmith who can help.

I’ll look in to it but think the overall cost is going to scare this guy away, not sure what he will do otherwise 😕

I love these sort or projects, always most satisfying once complete.

    cheers

Sadly, most customers will cough at the price & go for 2 separate signs in cases like these. Very rare you’ll get one saying – OK, go for it. When they do, it’s great (if it works out!) :lol1:

Hope you get it after all your inevitable brain scratching!

I would only use box section when I weld up brackets, but if you’re happy to use angle you don’t need to weld anything. It’ll all bolt up fine, probably just need a cross brace that it wouldn’t need if it were welded. Depends if you can find anyone helpful and at a fair price!
