  • Finishing A-board/swing board edges

    Hi guys

I’m just interested to know how you guy finish the edges if you coat a swing board in vinyl.

I’m never happy with how i do it and I am interested to know what i should be doing.

Firstly i cut my vinyl by hand roughly to the size of the panel, i then apply it on dry, once it’s all on i then get a knife and cut around the edges, once this is done i then put the lettering on top.

The thing with doing it this way is that you can always feel the edge of the vinyl and i’m worried that it will start to peel off in time.

    Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

if you trim it neat and the vinyl is of decent quality you shouldnt have any problems mate.

if the vinyl is budget type stuff then yh, it can shrink a bit, sometimes curl back and leav adhesive, only to get dirty etc. but as i said, its a flat panel and as long as its trimed neat, you should be fine.

Good stuff, thanks. I’m using 751 so it should stay on their nicely, just one of those questions i feel stupid asking but i’d rather feel stupid for 5 minutes than get it wrong time and time again.

no shame in it at all, its always better checking mate,
as for 751, that will be more than enough as its a cast vinyl and a great brand at that.

if time is on your side, its sometimes a nice finish to trim the panel 5-10mm back from the edge exposing a white border of the panel below. thats IF the panel is painted already.

    Thanks Rob.

I take it that to get a smooth cut that you would do the 5/10mm cut on the cutter rather than by hand?

I nearly always go over my edges with a file, like I do window tint on a glass door.
I use a very fine file such as a halfords ignition file.

and even sometimes with some fine emery paper for a very smooth finish.
I find if I just trim with a blade there are still some patches which can be caught and possibly lift so always feel happier sanding smooth so nothing catches. It seem to feather the thickness of the vinyl at the edge down to nothing.

Thanks Stuart, I understand emery paper is a very fine sandpaper, first time i’ve come across it, where can you get that from?

Most hardware or DIY shops its just the fine black faced sanding paper.
A fine sand paper would do but tends to leave bits of grit so the black stuff is better.

Thanks Stuart, I know the stuff now, used it plenty of times.

Use a fine file with downward stroke only at an angle this will stop the edge from lifting.

Its useful to lightly sand with fine grade wet and dry to take that ‘sharp’ edge off the edge but do remember to wipe the board dust free before flooding with vinyl
