It’s looking messy just now but I can see that it will be nice and spacious when it’s finished. I think it’s very exciting getting a new place with the opportunity to set everything up exactly the way you want it. I thoroughly recommend you follow Robs demonstration and build a set of vinyl racks. I followed his instructions to the letter and the end result is not only a tidy system for storing vinyl – it looks good too.

I’m looking forward to seeing pictures of the unit when it is finished.

Here’s a picture of our vinyl racks in our unit:-

    Nice one Kate.

I like to see these old buildings renovated and re-used. So much more interesting than cloned modern buildings.

I’m currently tickling up an old transport cafe, built in 1955, to move all our print stuff into.

Good luck with your project, and be sure to post up pictures of the finished product.

Great series of pictures kate… even at this stage you can see the new work place oozing out from underneath the rubble.
as has been said, great building for passing traffic. hope you get a nice big fascia sign up on the front as well as each side of the building for added impact. look forward to seeing the place when its done…

well done you all for mucking in… 😀

best of luck Kate, in the middle of a long overdue re-vamp myself……..it is at the stage of ‘worse before it gets better’! 😀 Followed Phil’s bench building tutorial and must say I’m delighted with the result.

Looks great. You can really see the potential showing through. It is great when you can build a workshop to suit your needs. I have similar vinyl rack set up to Phil and it works a treat. Looking forward to the finished article. Probably a good weekend should finish it off? 😀 😉

Looks like you’ve still got a bit of work to do. It’s nice to see that you’ve got some natural light from the windows – I hate working with flourescent lighting.

Phil – you’ve got a very nice floor there. Doesn’t it get a bit uncomfortable using the computer down there next to the wall ,or is that where you make your wife work?

    Hi John,

Yes my unit is in The Paddock on the border between Chatham and Rochester, where are you based?

I currently work from my dining room and spare room so to have a proper workshop is going to be amazing, need to get the ceilings finished, the toilet and kitchen in and the whole space needs to be cleared out and painted. O and i’ve just found out my solicitor has decided to take a 3 week holiday how rude!!!!

A friend of mine is leasing the lower floor and is planning on using the space as an art gallery, so I will be sharing the signage areas with her (of course I’ll be doing them)

My unit is just over 1000sqft and I will be sub letting half of it to my father who is a traditional signwriter, he’s been in the business for about 20 years I think.

So I will have my vinyl/print room, he will have a paint shop and we will share the fabrication and production room.

I love the vinyl roll holder so will be printing out the info and getting started, its a great way of storing them without losing any space!!

I will also be making an 8ft x 4ft work bench on casters so will keep you updated with that.

O and Jason there certainly will be an opening party so keep you eyes open, being in oz thou it may be a little out of the way so a cold fosters may have to suffice (I could always set up a web cam lol).

If any of you guys are local then you are more than welcome to come once a date has been set.

O and for traditional signwriters my dad Mick is planning on having a small convention once we’re up and running. Watch this space 🙂

    Hi all,

Kate the unit looks like its going to be really nice once completed!

We are currently in the process of setting up a new digital print business and have been viewing a few units this week.

What would really helpfull would be to see how the rest of you have laid out your sign shops / print area’s or just any clever ideas you have on storage etc… I have a rough idea of what we need to fit in and the layout we want but im sure someone out there has some use full tips.

Looking at a few units the obvious first steps would be just to white wash the walls / ceiling and lay a nice "easy-clean" floor.

    All the best
    Nick

    Hi everyone,

YAY I am extremely pleased to announce that I am FINALLY in my unit and have just started cutting and weeding on my new bench I will upload finished pics over the next few days its soo exciting to finally be able to do everything in the one room rather than spread out at home.

When I have the grand opening I will let you all know and if you’re in the area would be great to welcome you a long for a celebratory drink or 10!!

Good to hear that you’ve moved in, it’s a nice feeling isn’t it.
I have a job to deliver to Chatham next week, I’ll let you know when so that you can lock the door or go out! 😛
