For a couple of weeks now my router has been flashing an occasional red light at me, instead of constant green. Lunchtime yesterday I thought, I’ll ring the ISP and ask if they can help, so after pressing 1 then 3 then 8 I started listening to a sound like somebody blowing bubbles in water – no it’s the technician asking about the problem. In short his answer was that my router was at fault. So I rang the router manufacturer’s call centre, 2 then 5 then 2 again, name, age etc, ”nothing wrong with your router I can see everything here, its your ISP he bubbled. Ring them back an give them this fault code”
Like the muggins I am, I spent the next 2 hours batting the ” it’s not our fault it’s theirs” ball back and forth between the two call centres. The last call to the ISP finished up with me being given a free router, which arrived this morning! And the opposing side? After being assured by 5 different techs at the router call centre, a senior technician finally admitted that I needed to download a firmware update to cure the problem, at that point I was completely out of expletives to be able to describe to him that after all the refreshes to default settings I had no connection at all, so I calmly replaced the receiver on the phone and went outside and committed a violent assault on a plastic dustbin.

P.S. The firmware update installed this morning seems to have worked

your problem sounds like ur on a terrible isp….
i use eclipse and get a real person… but as i am a technician, if you got flashing red light or similar, normally 3 things…

1: router got fried due to lightening strike (quite common)
2 username/password failed, possibly due to local bt issues, bit of downtime
3: you added a sky box and not considered a filter for the box.

if the red light was flashing and you could still use the internet… bit of black tape might sort it

Did you try switching it off and back on again 😕

It would seem that it was a password issue, however the ISP changed the password and it wouldn’t work so they told me to call the router people and it went on and on and on.
I did the switching off bit and checked all the settings before I rang anyone, I lost count of how many times I did a reset to the factory default, anyway the firmware update seems to be working and I’ve now got a spare router.
I wonder how many hours are lost annually in small businesses on calls to call centres?

I hope you have also been outside and apologised to the plastic dustbin who had done absolutely nothing wrong and was in no way involved with the router problem
