  • Favour – App tape slitting..

Posted by Garrie on April 7, 2007 at 11:27 am

    Hi all,

Hope your all having a good easter weekend.

I’ve got a favour to ask, I’ve got a good few 610mm logs of app tape and I was wondering if anyone has the ability to slit 1 of them for me, I’d be wanting it slit to 300mm and 2 x 155mm.

    Thanks in advance.

sorry Garrie I was one of the ones that looked we had a 1220 roll should have been split 2x 610 peter cut it with a circular saw wasn’t perfect but did work sort of and as we are so far away from you seemed pointless to offer to do it for you !!! unless you want a weekend break 😀 don’t really know how suppliers do it

Garrie, I am another one like Lynn who had a look and couldn’t really help so didn’t post a reply simply to say sorry mate can’t help.
I have cut logs down myself before on a band saw but it isn’t perfect and can leave rough edges on one end of the tape which can catch and cause the tape to tear (normally just when you don’t want it to).

Trouble is most people just won’t have the right gear to do this properly so haven’t replied to you. Have you tried some of the suppliers in your area like Europoint and Amari? I am sure they would do it for you but not sure what sort of price they would charge.

    Hey all,

Thanks for replying, I was a bit grumpy the other night and I’m sorry 😳

Will speak nicely to Amari 😀

I wonder what equipment, suppliers use to slit Vinyl/app tape etc, as the cuts are always clean.

    Cheers all

The lathe used to cut logs of tape or vinyl is a big bar that the roll is threaded on to. This rotates (like a lathe) and then a non-powered blade is pushed against it, and then cuts into the roll. Like Rob says, the blade is like the one on a bacon slicer.

Posh lathes can be programmed to do multiple cuts at differing widths. Also, some people attempt to cut narrow pinstriping rolls using a lathe. Doesn’t really work. Proper striping machines run the material through in a linear fashion, cutting as they go.

    You did ask, Lynn. 🙂

Lynn – there are two different ways this is done. The first method (used by less experienced vinyl manufacturers) is to do it wet. The vinyl is applied to the backing paper after first applying a weak soap solution to the back of the vinyl. The water is then squeegeed out and allowed to dry before being rolled up into 50m long rolls.

The second method is a bit more difficult whereby the more experienced vinyl manufacturer applies the vinyl to the backing paper dry. He then uses long strokes of his felt applicator to smooth the vinyl onto the paper without any creases.

Well you did ask Lynn 😉

most vinyl "manufacturers" are in other countries mate. 9/10 suppliers are distributors, though i would imagine a good few with log slitting fascilities in-house.

Does anyone know how they actually make vinyl? I think that would be interesting.

Vinyl is made from Vinyl-Moths, only come out in badly lit 20degree rooms 😉

I think I might know someone for whom that suggestion might be attractive. If there’s any interest I could make an enquiry.

Rob, the manufacturers being abroad is the whole point. If we’re going anywhere there needs to be other attractions because vinyl factories don’t have that much to see in them.

If Rob sees water in the tunnel he would have every right to be a tad concerned. 😀
