hey oop Hugh,
If thats a frame around it, what did you use,
Simple burt, effective designPeter
-
na Pete, thats clingfilm arouns the edges to protect them once it was finished,
art is the customers design, when initially quoting they didnt give me the budget they’d agreed on, so i offered a sign using their design, but with the board cut around the edges to follow the wavy lines on the sign, but they didnt have enough money for that, or a frame, or stand off etc, so this will be screwed direct to the cladding with them fancy self drilling self tappers !

Well done Hugh, I take my hat of to you producing that size of sign with your ‘workshop’. I take it you did it on the lawn?

i agree too…nice sign hugh 😀

i couldn’t get them in the workshop ! the door is at the end and near to the fence, anything wider that 2ft x8 long is hard to get in the door ! i did them on tressles by the pond, some rather curious frogs looking on, i think they just wanted to get back to mating !
re the size, it was tricky, purely cos of the wind and the size of the lettering, i taped it in the middle and worked outwards, but it was still a 3ftx2ft ‘sail’ in the wind !!
-
Well done Hugh,
I like it too.
You just thought they were only frogs, in actual fact they are workplace health and safety on a new drive to stop signmakers from croaking it !! 🙄
mmmm
-
Well done Hugh. Excellent in fact.
Before I built my shed I used to do big stuff like this outside too. Didn’t have a lot of problem with the rain most days, but the heat, wind and humidity were a real trial most days. With heat comes dust, so you I had the odd ‘textured sign’ leaving the premises from time to time 😳
Before I go, just want to add: Simon, you’re a nutter! :lol1:

thanks for the comments guys n gals ! i gues i’m quite proud of this as its the biggest sign by far, that i’ve made to date, it wasnt without problems, the wind aused me to get a couple of wrinkles in there, which ‘ve managed to mosly get rid of, and ssome how when i pulled off the last bit of app tape, a bit ot the R got ripped off, so a little patch was placed over the offending area, but otherwise it went quite well considering everything,
having the tressles i bought a few weeks back certainly helped, infact i’d say they’ve paid for thenselves with just this job ! they were only aabout £35 ($60us), and are so versatile, can be used aas regular tressles, or have bits on to place to scaffold planks on to make them into a catwalk, from 900mm to about 1400mm in height, might even buy another pair !
-
Well done hugh. I know exactly what you went through mate!!
What tressels do you mean ?? Give us a pic dude

though mine isnt draper and was half the price for the same specs ! -

Looks good Hugh well done, did you have trouble fitting it by your self ??
Lynn

thanks, was ok to fit, i explained i couldnt match the original quote due to needing to rent a pair of hands for the morning, so it was suggested he help me, that way i could match the older previous quote. all went quite smothly, dunnor as i’d fancy doing it on my own, not in landscape anyways, wouldnt be too hard in portrait i think though.

looks good hugh 😀 well done looks nice and straight, what method did you use to line it up? 😉

thanks Nik (nice new avatar btw !),
decided that it would be roughly level with the window, lined it up roughly with a row of rivets for the first fixing, then a spirit level before using more fixings,
the real time saver here was the self drilling fixings.
-
good job hugh you dont do things by half the self drilling screws are great i think they are standard in factory cladding i have some in a coarse thread and fine thread i drill a pilot hole and they are even easier would love different coloured caps all i have is white (if anybody knows of a supplier we would love to know)
whats your next job hugh i imagine whatever it is even if you get a factory unit
6 feet will be done out the door in the wind and rain great to see job like this thanks for posting the start to finishDerek
-
Looks a good job Hugh, well done. Where did you get your self drilling fixings from?
-
😳 lol, cheers guys,
the screws i just got from a local building fasteners type shop, they sell tools, safety gear and nuts/bolts/screws etc, i forget the proper term for them, but they’ll know what ya mean if you ask for self drilling self tappers,
for thin cladding you’ll want the coarse thread, but don’t overtighten,
for thicker stuff you use the thin thread, the shop demo’d them by drilling it into a 2mm thick piece of galv’d steel !
Derek,
as for my next job ? i’m told the ooompah fandango tribe of cannibles, deep in the amazonian rain forests, need a new keep out sign, i’m off to take a look tomorrow !! 😮 -
Hi Hugh
Great sign, How do you go about joining 2 sheets of alupanel like this, do you have to back it with another strip then screw it together, or is it just butt jointed when you screw it up?
Great work
-
HI Ali, simply butt jointed, i’m gonna pop back and cover the gap in the letters with some white vinyl (forgot to take it with me) and paint the tops of the bolts black,
