  • Face covering for flat cut letters

Posted by Stuart Miller on May 16, 2017 at 1:29 pm

I have a customer who wants a printed design on the face of some flat cut letters.

Is it best to print onto vinyl then cover the letters or print direct onto the letters?
I have hear printing direct is UV printing which will not last as well as the vinyl.

Also if printing direct is Foam PVC or Acrylic better?

    cheers

Foam PVC is much better for printing onto, however, it cannot be safely laser cut. I direct UV print onto acrylic, and its pretty good, I am changing the machine to primer shortly instead of gloss, which will improve adhesion considerably. It veruy much depends on the finish you are going for.

We’ve used vinyl, static can be a problem on acrylic letters, especially if the letters aren’t cleaned, but works well,

We produce these for a number of clients 10mm clear acrylic printed in the rear then sealed with a 2mm sheet and back with locators. The print is fully sealed within and has no issues.

    quote James Sahota:

I called you days ago to talk about this James and was promised a call back that day, still waiting.
To be honest this has happened nearly every time I have tried to order something from you so now go where I get a reply.
    Sorry but I do try.

Customer wants solid white letters 10cm thick without standoffs with print on the front.
Offered them Foam or acrylic and they seem to be starpped as chose Foam even after advising acrylic.

Foam PVC especially 10mm will get grubby on the cut edges.

Our sign on the unit has 10mm foam letters, and the edges aren’t so white anymore, but that’s over 8 years old now.

Thanks Dave, yes that is what I have told them.

I take it that’s a typing error Stuart & you mean 10mm rather than 10cm :smiles:

The edges will go dirty as David says but it can take a while, I have 15mm foam letters on my unit, it’s actually 3 layers of 5mm foam, 2 white with blue in the middle, they have been up for 3 or 4 years now & the edges still look OK. Someone asked me if I made them out of flip flops once :smiles: :smiles:
It was actually one of the first things I did after getting the CNC router.

Having said that I would still be advising the customer that acrylic would be a better choice same as you have done Stuart

    That’s strange Stuart just looking at my live CRM system which is logged directly to our telephone lines and emails and keeps a detailed track off all correspondence we have with a client and I notice the following;

    – The last call from you was on Tuesday this week, I’ve been out of the office and have only just returned hence the reason no one has replied.

    – The last email was from the 13th of April when you were having difficulties saving an ai file….

Apart from the above one call which was made to us when I wasn’t here I’m not entirely sure what you are referring too in the instance of never getting a reply back.

Every time you call if it’s regarding a quote you are asked to send in an email if someone isn’t available on the phone and the very reason this is done is so the first member of staff who comes free can come back to you with a reply.

Sometimes a supplier and client relationship just don’t click, I can assure you we have served and helped a lot of people on these boards and unfortunately, you just seem to be the one unlucky one who feels he hasn’t received the service the should have and for this, I apologise.

A simple drawing with sizes and what your after sent to our sales email address is all you need to do..No reason to over complicate the process by phoning up and leaving messages and then getting frustrated when our ever so busy team can’t come back to you.

    Happy to help as always!

I sometimes prefer to speak rather than e-mail, especially when looking for advice on materials etc as it’s easier to have a conversation and ask questions.

We’ve a large project on the go at the moment, that James is working on. There’s various complications regarding materials, installations methods, and multiple people who have to approve things, and it all needs installing at the end of the month.

With it probably going to be a quick turnaround, I know how frustrating it can be waiting on prices as days tick by. I’m sure a large project to us, is very small in the grand scheme of things for others.

Personally I’d rather wait on price, and know it’s going to be done correctly and on time, than have a quote land in the inbox immediately to be let down on delivery and quality.

I tend to do most our estimating, along with site surveys, production, installations, and it’s hard graft juggling all the roles, and sometimes things do get forgotten, and sometimes decisions need to be made as to what takes priority.

We’re dealing with another company who are driving me up the wall… we’ve the order in the bag, but the customer needs to see a sample, over a month and they’ve still got it wrong. :bangshead:

I am quite happy to email for quotes and usually do, but as Dave says we sometimes need to talk to discuss materials or the best way to do something.
When I called on Tuesday your secretary said you were there and said would call me back by the end of the day.
If she had told me you were away then fine but she didn’t and she never asked me to email.

I’m totally surprised to hear negative comments about Group101. Even recently a mess up with prints from my client where my client and I missed a part of antrailer wrap as the design changed james sorted out our problem right away. He was within his right to say F off. He answers my calls and I always get reply right away even when he was recently in Germany.

He sent me 8sqm of wrap printed and wrapped off his own back and free yes free to sort me out as my client was not the nicest and was pressurising me.

James and the team are the best.

Not really anything negative about james and 101 and I have been pleased when i have used them. I did not come on here all guns blazing with a complaint.
James came on saying he could priovide the service and all I said was I had actually already called him and been promised a call back and it never came. This happens, no big deal I am not complaining just letting him know what happened, end of.
