  • Fabrication help please with square sign

Posted by Kevin Flowers on July 3, 2005 at 12:46 pm

    Hi all
have a sign consisting of a distorted square, laying over another distorted square with the first being rotated by 15 degrees to expose the first square. These are to be 1800mm square so will require joints, 2 questions

1/ suggestions on making the joint invisible, the panel is just a solid block colour and will look disgusting with a joint line running through it.

2/ as anyone painted foamex if so with what and what is the durability etc

im not following what you mean exactly, though you can get 2 metre wide materials.
what about butting to sheets together, fixing and secure on the rear then flood coat the face with vinyl. if your join is good you wont see it below vinyl.

Good point Rob i forgot that amari do 2 meter sheets of foamex was working on using 1500mm sheets, brain isnt working lately too much going on. THe colours are Aqua & teal and i’m sure as good as the joints will be any joint will spoil the look so was considering painting and then a nice gloss coat of laquer if it will work on foamex.

there is paints for plastics on the go. give b&q a call asking do they do it. there must also be spray versions available. auto places must do it for car bumpers and the like. maybe mcrod may see this post and advise you better, even Richard Urquhart?

    Robs Right.
B&Q do Plasticoat in aerasoles. Dont know if it would be cost effective though, I have used it on small areas and itsfine. you will need quite a few coats to get a good finish. It is quite difficult to cover a large area without runs. Might be worth having a chat with your local body shop.
Or have you thought of using di bond (not sure if it comes in 2m though)

    I always use Karnaval Coatings 01792 582828.

They will mix paint to any colour, and it is designed for UPVC window frames so it actually ‘melts’ to the surface of the plastic. Comes in gloss matt or satin. No preparation required except a clean, and works on Dibond the same but you need to key Alucolour/Leboard before painting.

I also use it on A Boards, swing signs.

    Cheers

I had the predicament of having to paint some foamex letters the other
    month, causing me much stress.
These were foamex letters we had to remove from a fascia repaint and
replace. They wanted a particular yellow with a silver outline, couldn’t
locate the yellow, so in the end I painted the whole letter in silver using
‘Japlac’ bought from Focus it went on really well, I then placed yellow
vinyl over the top and cut in from the edge with scalpel to leave a
10mm silver border, looked the bizz!
After Sang this I don’t know how I would feel having to cover a a large
area ie, keeping brush marks to a mini um.
I wish I’d known of Dave’s place a few months ago, the trouble I went
to trying to find a paint for foamex!!
