  • Fabric Paint ? any suggestions ?

Posted by Dave Harrison on January 22, 2007 at 9:52 pm

I have been asked if I could apply a graphic / logo to 6 felt table cloths and a couple of display boards.

The felt material is quite thick (apparently special stuff to meet fire regs etc)
The logo is solid black with a shape next to it. I was thinking of making up a mask and painting the fabric. I know you can get fabric paint for art shops and B&Q etc etc but wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions.

    thanks in advance

    Dave 🙂

    Dave,

Have you considered using screen inks to do this?

Sericol Inks have a technical help desk you could call and maybe they can
advise you the best type of ink to use on felt.

    Sericol Technical Helpline 0845 770 80 70

I’d be interested to hear what they suggest to you if you call them.

    Neil 🙂

we have screen printed similar in the past, but the material is so porous it requires 4 or 5 pulls to get the required density.

DIY – can you not get an iron on flock or similar and iron it on?

i use flock for the wording/designs on felt patches for a customer and it works very well.

not too expensive to do and if you only need a small amount ebay always has some going.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

Neil I called sericol and while the guy there was very helpful he said it would be hit and miss with screen inks, the problem being felt surface. He suggested a product used to print onto Nylon bags but again said it be trial and error @ £59 per kg it would be an expensive experiment.

As regards to the Flock, thats what I used last year ( same job ) but this year they have increased the size of their logos / branding. While it might be possible to break the logo up into smaller sections, its still a pain fitting such a large piece of material under the heat press.. . and household irons just don’t heat up a large enough area.

The other problem I had was that when this felt gets heated it seems to change colour slightly( from grey to pink )

So off to the artshop in the morning to see what I can find !
anyway thanks again for your suggestions
