F F F F F F Flipping freezing!!
My fitters are complaining about the cold!! I’ve told them to work faster but they got nasty 😀
Seriously advice for those working out of doors appreciated.
I used to work in the Shetland Isles, they don’t know the meaning of cold!! -

as you know its impossible to fit vinyls in this weather mate… with regards to fitting signs… well i always think a good thermal hat skins and boots is a great start. skins being just the nylon thin things they are.. very quickly build up heat.. the boots keep your feet well warm and the hat holds in the brains.. i mean heat. 😆 😆
i buy those cheap thick cotton gloves with the sort of skin on them.. & cut the thumb, index finger and middle finger tips of them… the gloves helps with the cold and only having those three finger tips missing makes life easy when picking up screws and stuff like that…either that or you could get a small trailer atached to there belts… put a blast heat and gas bottle in it and they can tow it round as they fit… may even be able to fit vinyls that way 😉 😆 😆

Seems like you can’t win sometimes…
One week it’s pi**ing it down and the next freezing cold.
Not really sure which is worst? – I have no premises as such, so have to work either outdoors or in the customers premises.

Its in the clothing mate, we wear snickers work wear, I have a pair of full storm proof double lined trousers with hooks that fit onto your boots to stop em from flapping, same with the jackets as well or send em down here, ive been caving at -7 deg in flowing water, once you have been that cold then anything else is like a holiday….lol

If you guy’s think it’s hard fixing graphics in this cold weather you should try signwriting outside…….. not much fun !!!!

i hav to say brian… i think i would really have to give that a miss.. the other day i had bother signing my name outside for the guy from fedex delivering stuff… never mind trying to be crative…. 😆

Glad to read that its not just us feeling the cold, this week its been really bitter. I’ve had to dig the thermals out. A hat is the most important Item I think and a decent windproof jacket.
Robert I never thought about cutting the fingers off a pair of gloves, I have a pair of fingerless fishing gloves that are really good. When I first got them I thought my fingertips might still get cold but they dont seem to.
This week I’ve had the woolly hat, gloves, jacket, thermals, ski socks and boots on. Hope it doesnt get much colder as I only have the overtrousers to go !
Something I did find useful last year that I havent dug out yet is a pocket handwarmer which I got for fishing. Sometimes I really feel the cold in the small of my back, probably got something to do with my hips being knacked following the accident. I used to light the thing up and pop it down the back of my tee shirt, worked a treat. -
My mate used to have one of those years ago… didnt know you could still buy them martin… or is it an old one or somthing 🙄

Never mind the cold weather – It’s about time we had a few gale force winds this year to bring down a few signs, then we can all make new ones to put back up again. A good storm is always good for turnover 😆 😆

On that subject when you supply and install a sign, and that sign gets blown down…who is responsible for it?I had a job that was installed and paid for ( cheque) there was a large storm come through before the cheque cleared, the customer stopped payment until I went and fixed it up. It was the worst windsquall to hit Perth in 20 years mind. Up to 120kmh winds.

Yesterday it was so bloody HOT 42degrees C over 100 degrees in the old tongue. Driving my car with my hand out the window it was like blowing an air dryer on my arms. If I had a vin in to sign, it’d have to be hosed and cooled off before installing vinyl. -

the last really really bad winds we had that brought the country to its knees. we had a call from an old customer. !our signs blown down! he said! (it had been up six years) he went on to say… “there is still part of it up so could you be quick” i told him ide be as quick as i could as we had variuos calls to attend due to the high winds… he said listen sonny! i only had this put up 6 years ago and it better still be under garuantee!i wont tell you what i said but it ended in OFF! 😆 😆 😆

I recently employed another english guy from Birmingham (signpainter) for all types of work he has been here on and off for about 6 years.
He was so angry last week when we were out and he was feeezing his nuts off, its all down to the clothing, we wear thermal boots, fleece lined work jackets and body warmers, I even have heated socks for extreme weather…..but for the day in question it was -10, we even managed to apply some vinyl, a few last minute changes to a sign system we made for an industrial estate, ( we were using 2 heatguns though).
We have now fitted Louis up with a winter wardrobe to avoid future problems!
Snickers I believe is Swedish, or was started here, good workwear, we also use Fristads (rolls-royce in workwear) and Bluewear, all reall good quality stuff, maybe if Snickers is in the UK those others might be too.

If you`re feeling the cold weather, put a pair of womens tights on, under your trousers.

it works a treat, only thing is those suspender clips play havoc with the drill holster, gets really sore after a good days swet-on 😉

Of course it’s worse up here in Scotland. Only the hardiest of signmakers refuse to wear anything under their Kilts in the coldest of weather. Frostbite isn’t an unknown hazard *hair*

I forgot to mention, when buying tights to wear under your trousers.
Go for a crutchless pair, as this helps with bath room vistits. Plus you`ve got the added bonus of – well if you need me to tell you, you`re too old. 😳 😳 😳

Robert I have had it for a while but I believe you can still buy them, I’ll ask about if you are interested. Pete I think we have the same problem as you, we are in an industrial unit but there is no heating in the main workshop, the roof is insulated to keep the cold in!!! so like you we have to go outside to warm up.
