  • eyecatching design needed for smart cars please?

Posted by Phill Fenton on July 28, 2008 at 10:23 am

I have been asked to go ahead and wrap a couple of smart cars for a good customer of ours. We have in the past always done their vehicles using cut vinyl -but this time they want to go for something much more eyecatching.

I sent them a couple of preliminary suggestions and they like the example shown here but have asked for me to develop this further. So I am calling on the experience of wrappers and wrap designers for a few pointers

Move the phone number on the back to below the number plate and join it on one line.

Maybe move the positioning of the larger logo to the left of the number and text cause at the moment its hard to read the company name.

I have absolutely no experience in wrap design but I always like seeing the ‘outsized’ effect whenever possible – you know, losing bits of the logo (which is maybe faded and maybe on a slant) , for example, because it is bigger than the space it has been asked to fill, disappearing over the edges. As long as you have one correctly proportioned legible logo on each side to be readable that should be ok.

i done bubbles before, can you export that again with boxes around the car showing sheet widths and height of the areas you will print, to show us how you are thinking of applying the wrap

Also, print a sample and have a think about the size of bubble, do you need small bubbles or massive ones.

    Thanks for the input guys.

Dave – I’m not sure what size of bubbles to use – or how to ensure continuity between sheets/around corners/onto the roof etc. These are the sorts things I was hoping for some advice and pointers on.

Gareth – I was thinking along the same lines myself – one big oversized graphic/logo on each plane (side/roof/front/rear).

Jason – thanks for the suggestions – I believe you are one of those that has a great deal of experience in designing and applying wraps and I welcome your suggestions and criticisms.

    Hey Phil,

If you want the bubbles to appear seamless across different panels then don’t place a bubble over the seam. Your near going to get it 100%.

One trick though is to cut the bubble out from one panel and then apply it to the other panel. I’ve done this before I’ll find an example for you.

    Hey Phil,

If you see the back leg going onto the bumper you can see that this has been cut out from the side panel then applied over the bumper to make it appear though its perfect.

You could do the same to make it look seamless. Just make sure when the bubble overlaps its overlapping onto the background colour and not onto another bubble or it might look funny.

    Cheers
    Jason

Another idea Phil is if you need to have a straight line of text on a vehicle, apply cut vinyl over the wrap. This will not distort over contours.

I agree with Jason as well about "Joining" over difficult areas.

Check out what I did with my work Ute. This image is hard to use as a wrap as faces should all be facing the right way or they’ll look weird. What I did was to print and apply so the faces were the right way up, then trimmed out the tops of the heads to wrap onto the bonnet from the quarter panel.

Yeah I know the faces still look weird 😛
